Strange Situation

Hey, I am currently in a peculiar situation. I live in the residence halls. Anyways, my roommate just moved out and now I am all alone in a double. Should I tell my RA, or anyone else? I am afraid that if I do so, I will not have the room to myself for much longer.

-Thanks.

As nice as a double to yourself is, I would probably tell the RA...there are a bunch of people who don't even have housing yet, and still need it.

Someone SHOULD have been notified, either by the roommate or via some other bureaucratic measure, that the roommate had moved out.

You should say more about the situation- did the person move out surreptitiously, or did they tell the RA? Do they plan on coming back anytime? From what you've said so far, it sounds to me like you should tell your RA.

Keep your mouth shut and enjoy it while you can.

as much as I would like to agree with SnuggleMonster, you have to realize that a lot of people don't have housing, and you should do what you can to help them out. Sucks...i know.

He moved out two days ago and the RA has no idea. What will happen if I tell her he moved out?

What will happen? The housing division will figure out what's going on, and you might get a new roommate.

Have some empathy for those without housing.

... and risk the chance of getting teamed with a terrible new roommate

anyways. if your roommate officially moved out, then the residence hall office will definitely add another person very soon.

I mean, come one Firax, the point is that it isn't about you, it's about the studens who are unable to get student housing. I know plenty of people who were unable to get a residence, so if the choice is having your own room or helping someone out, I would suggest the latter.

I was just kidding. There is no way the OP will have a double room to himself for long. Unless the roommate did not officially move out and is still paying the room and board.

If he moved out and didn't tell anyone, maybe not.

YoungBuddhist, I think that you recognize how selfish not telling anyone is. It's your choice, do what you will. Hopefully if you were one who lacked housing, some student in your current situation would let it be known.

Sorry firax, I reread my post and realized it came across harsher than I meant it to.
But I definitely agree with DRab.

YoungBuddhist, you are not keeping a student from having a place to sleep, your former roommate whose responsibility to inform the RA about his departure is!

"The monk did not kill the man, the katana did."

Certainly the roommate has some responsibility here, but you are saying that YoungBuddhist has no responsibility whatsoever?

The monk wielded and used the katana to kill the man.

Those saying, in my mind, have no bearing. The man wouldn't be dead in the first place if he didn't have the Katana.

Do the right thing. Tell your RA.

Yes, I'm saying that ... either ... 1) the roommate who moved out and stopped paying for the room (or asked for a rebate) and the school knows he moved out ... or ... 2) the roommate physically moved out while still paying for the room and if he is paying for it it is his room to use or not use as he wishes.

None the less, there are students that still need housing. YoungBuddist should make the RA aware of the situation and let the housing office go from there.
