Does anyone here have an opinion about which of these two would be better to attend? We don't want to pay for two trips to NYC. My son is scheduled to attend StrawHat, but someone told him that it would be better for him to attend NETC. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Either can work out for a particular individual, but I would strongly consider NETC or SETC. In general, the level of theater represented is better at these organizations.

I agree with mtdog that either is a good choice. They are also a few weeks apart so consider what’s best for your schedule. I would also point out that, although it’s a new thing and most likely nothing will come from it, Strawhats have the online casting resource for theatres to look at with the actor’s headshots and resumes. So even if you do not attend, there’s still a slim chance of being looked at by some theatres via the website. You could, in theory, earn a few callbacks from theatres simply because you are the right type and they haven’t seen it at any of the mass auditions. Again, a BIG stretch, but I think it’s a cool resource and I have been browsing it myself as I was accepted for an audition but cannot attend Strawhats due to a show at school.

Please note that it it probably too late to do the state level screenings that SETC requires. I think applications for NETC are still open, but you must be accepted (via paperwork) to do an NETC audition and not everyone gets approved. So if you want to try for an NETC slot, I would recommend getting that application in. As far as Strawhats, it sounds as if fewer theaters attend every year but it’s worth doing if you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get there.

Just checked out the Strawhats website yesterday for a friend and it says the Actor Applications are closed for this year.

Strawhats begins taking applications early in the fall and fills up rapidly. It seems people get slots on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you apply early enough next year, you should get a space.

I do know of people who apply early for StrawHat and do not get a slot, so early application is not an automatic “in” … however, they do fill slots and send notifications to applicants on a rolling basis. NETC does not notify any applicants until AFTER they application deadline.

For SETC all of the state level screenings are in the fall. If you do not go to a school in the south you need to look up and see what southern state screens the applicants from your state… for example in VA we screen applicants from the north east.

Outdoor Drama Auditions do grant slots on a first come first served basis. UPTA appears to as well, but UPTA is really more for graduating seniors since you must indicate that you are available for full-time year round work.

My D has been accepted at both of these. Her auditions are one day apart – one in St Louis and one in NYC. She will be finishing up a show at school on a Sat night, jumping on an early morning flight to St Louis for a morning audition and then taking a flight to NYC the next morning for a late afternoon audition at Strawhat. I am beginning to think this is silly! If she were to pick one, which should she pick? Are there similar theaters present at both? She is currently EMC status having worked at an Equity theater already. She may be back there this summer as well but will not know for awhile…

Alliesmom - If your D logs in to her StrawHats account she can see the theatres that will be there and their season of shows. NETC has a members log in area but since my D is not going to NETC I can’t tell you if the members area includes a list of theatres or not. Looking at the shows and determining which theatre have shows that are right for her type could help her make a decision if she needs to choose one or the other. It is tough deciding which auditions to do but she is fortunate to have choices. Best of luck to her!

Thanks so much! I will have her do that. Has NETC come out yet? I am not sure if she applied there as well but I am curious as to whether there is overlap there…

Anyone know anything about the Midwest Theater auditions?

Generally, NETC does not send out decisions until after the deadline… which is 2/1.

Here is the list of past theatres that have attended the MWTA, but they are full already for 2011:
[Midwest Theatre Auditions](http://www.webster.edu/depts/finearts/theatre/mwta/pastattendingtheatres.html)

She has already gotten an audition spot at Midwest Theater Auditions. Problem is that they are back to back (literally) to Strawhat auditions. Wasn’t sure if she should do BOTH or one or the other…

Alliesmom - The one thing I have heard (and I stress heard) from others is that the last day of these multi-day auditions are often less well-attended by the theatres. So if I had to choose one, I would probably choose MWTA since her StrawHats audition is on the last afternoon.
