Strong Opera and Vocal/voice Grad schools

Hi friends! I am a soprano voice junior getting my Bachelor of music performance voice at a good small liberal/conservatory in Florida. I am looking for a Graduate School with a very strong Opera Performance program. I am particularly interested in schools in NY, Texas, And Tennessee but willing to go anywhere for the right school. PEASE HELP! Thank you!!

A friend’s daughter, a very good opera singer, got her master’s at Rice, and I think was happy with the program.

SUNY Fredonia offers an M.M. program with a focus on voice. It does have opera listed and I know (since i have a child at the school) that it does put on operas as part of their performance program.

The school is known for its music and theater programs. It’s a lovely campus, though remote (about 45 minutes outside of Buffalo) but the airport and Amtrak are about 45 minutes away and the school offers bus service for breaks and holidays.

My D went through MM audition a couple of years ago. I’m not expert on schools however. In NYC, there is of course MSM and Juillard…and Eastman in upstate NY. TX has Rice. I’m not sure about Tennessee. None of these schools will be an easy admit…as no MM program is an easy admit…but the 4 listed are pretty tough.

When my D went through the process, her teacher, her peers and contacts from summer programs were the “drivers” in picking schools. I was not “consulted” too much…besides for financial discussions. She watched the seniors closely when she was a junior…to see where they got offers. Also in summer programs, she met teachers and/or students from some target schools and could compare herself. I do think most students can tell who is similar to them. She was able to skip a pre-screen at one school due to a summer program. Ironically it was the school she got no scholarship at in the end…but my D was cooling to the teacher there. She kept saying “she’s ancient!”. Also maybe there was little need for her type of mezzo so the message was “sure you can come here if you want to pay full freight”. She passed.

So hopefully, your teacher and peers can help you with a list. Good luck.
