Stuck between UM Ann Arbor and UT austin for Engineering

I got into the engineering schools at Both U Mich and UT-Austin an plan to major in electrical or computer engineering. I am in state in Michigan but I really want to get out of Michigan and go to a place that isn't bone crushingly cold in the winter and has a more job opportunities. I literally live half hour from U Mich and to me that seems far too close to where i went to high school.

However what I am concerned with is whether or not employers or graduate schools will look at me differently whether or not I go to Michigan or Texas.

I was raised an Iowa fan and have an irrational hatred of Michigan and think everyone who goes there becomes an a*****e :P. I really want to move away from home and start my own life and that is why I like Texas in general more than Michigan. but I won't move far away if it means I'm considered to be less qualified than someone who goes to Michigan.

Any thoughts?

BTW money isn't really that much of an issue

If money is not an issue, go for Texas since you seem not to like Michigan. I don’t think job prospects would be better or worse at either school.

Internship opportunities may be better for an ECE major in the Austin/Dallas areas. Also you may learn to like “The Eye of Texas”.

I don’t see why you are “stuck” if money is not an issue. Just go to Texas.

On a personal note, I don’t care for the whole state of Texas either aesthetically or culturally. Your degree from Michigan will also be seen nationally as a bit more prestigous than one from Texas. Saying that however, an engineering degree from Texas is every bit as good as one from Michigan.

It sounds like you already made up your mind. Enjoy UT @ Austin!

novi,
Austin is very different from the rest of Texas … culturally. It’s one of the fastest growing city in the country; the “silicon valley of the south” and the “live music capital of the world”. And then there is the 6th Street district; the OP will enjoy more when he turns 21 … documentarily.

really? The weather?

The weather is what is stopping you from going to one of the best engineering schools in the country? And I am guessing you pay less at Umich…

^I think it’s really only that he grew up hating Michigan. But whatever, go where you will be happy.

@mldwoody he is choosing somewhere to live for the next 4+ years, he better enjoy it…

I’d go to Texas. If you wrote in your essay that you “have an irrational hatred of Michigan and think everyone who goes there becomes an a*****e”, I’m sure the admissions committee would have recommended you go to Texas and looked for someone who is actually interested in attending Michigan. There is a whole thread of students waiting for you to go to Texas so they can go to their dream school.

christ it was a joke… My dad got his grad degree from michigan…

Anyway I’ve decided Michigan. It’d be too much of a hassle to move and even though money isn’t a problem, I’m happier knowing that an extra 20 grand a year can go towards my Brothers’ education/parents’ retirement.

I’ll just have to make myself love the words “go blue”

thanks for the input though

How prestigious is UT Austin? Right now I’m stuck between UT Austin and the university of Denver. Idk which to chose. My ultimate dream is to go to harvard or Yale, but I know to go to those schools for graduate school I at least have to do good and come from a fairly prestigious undergrad school.

I am kinda leaning toward UT. They have a good graduate law program.

Congrats jcollins! You’ll be saying go blue soon enough, a game or two at the big house should do it.

jcollins, how were we supposed to know you were joking? You come from the Hawkeye state afterall. Besides, UT is awesome too. But if you have decided to attend Michigan, in the spirit of your contrarian nature, you can always learn to say “Go Maize!” ;)

JSea, UT-Austin is a much better school than the University of Denver. I would definitely go for UT.

Austin is very different from the rest of Texas … "

Yes I know. I’ve been to Austin. Unfortunately you have to drive hundreds of miles through Texas to get there, if you are not flying in of course. It’s like an old friend of mine who once lived in the worst state ever said to me, “You know what’s the best thing about living in Ohio?..You don’t have to drive through the entire state to get out of it.” :-)

Woo Woo Woo…

Now I don’t wanna hear people rippin on Ohio

I’ve only visited U Michigan a few times, but it was absolutely amazing. The school, scenery, weather, town, everything was beyond what I had expected.

It’s perfect for the student searching for a “college town” environment, and the campus is gorgeous.

haha actually i was born and raised in south Detroit (pun definitely intended)

anyway, I’m sure I’ll learn to love it. now I just need to figure out what I’m going to do for the rest of my life haha
