So I have been thinking for a few months now on what i should write about for my college essays, and have come to the unfortunate conclusion that I am COMPLETLY stuck. My top choice for a school is UNC, which worries me because from what i have heard, they take the essay portion very seriously in the application.

I'm in the range for UNC in all statistical categories (GPA, SAT, blah blah blah), but I need some help trying to find a topic. I feel like everyone has a original idea that will shine on an application, and I can't think of anything unique.

I always wanted to write about my passion for hockey, but i feel like that is completely lame and uninspiring for a topic. Anyone have an idea on how I can think of some ideas?

I apologize if this was vague, but thanks to anyone who tries to help!

Try writing out different things that define you. Having this written down can help you keep your ideas organized. Ask yourself: What makes you unique? (I realize this is a vague question and is hard to answer) What are your hobbies? List, off the top of your head, four or five things that have happened during your time in high school that stand out to you.

Why do you like hockey? Is there anything unique and specific about your experience playing hockey?

What are some of your positive qualities? Do you have any personality quirks?

Ask others, too. Parents and friends are great at seeing positive qualities, and people you’ve met recently can give you more objective first impressions.

Write down everything and look for patterns.

You do know UNC has their own essay topics right? You can create your own as well, but their seven prepared topics might guide you and give you a better jumping off point.

Start by describing your most memorable moment in hockey and then explain the context. This is a unique angle on a topic that could definitely serve you well if you make it your own.
