Student Body Stereotypes [Discussion]

Could someone PLEASE explain/define and give examples of the following terms (and any other stereotypes you often hear):

Preppy Kids -- Are they bad people? Can you be friends with them? The impression I get from what I hear on these boards is that they're pompous and evil (okay...maybe I'm exaggerating on the evil part).

Hipster Kids

"Outdoorsy" Kids

Feel free to add anymore stereotypes that I may not have listed.

It’s just my $.02, but I personally wouldn’t set much store by these kinds of things. The reason “stereotypes” in general have negative connotations is that they unfairly and inaccurately lump people into pre-established groups.

If you’re actually in doubt over the definitions of these words, I would suggest trying
urbandictionairy .com

haha, when i visited california over the summer, i met up with my friend, who was trying to explain ‘hipsters’ to me. i-being from new jersey-had no idea. she brought me to an in-&-out burger, & we saw plentyyy, let me tell you. still can’t exactly put them in to words…they do seem awesome, though! :)

Oh, these stereotypes are real, alright. They had to come from somewhere. They describe particular cultures, such as emo. Emo is both a sub-culture and a stereotype, as are hipster, preppy, etc.

The stereotypes do exist, but the only people who cookie-cutter themselves into them are high school leftovers.

If you want to find good friends, you’ll keep this nonsense out of your mind.

Also, “outdoorsy” isn’t any particular clique of people…There are a lot of different kinds of people who like spend times outdoors and being athletic.

This thread is a fail. Not to sound rude but none of you answered my question. From YOUR POVs I wanted to know what these terms mean. Obviously I’m not going to go to school and be like “I’m not going to be friends with preppy kids so don’t talk to me!” I just wanted more info. on these stereotypes, so once again this thread is a FAIL. I’m a friendly person and attract friends from all stereotypes that people make.

An admin. can close this thread or whatever.

I generally associate preppy and hipster with clothing styles.

Preppy usually refers to a clean cut and classic style; lots of Vineyard Vines, J Crew, etc. It’s often associated with wealthy people from the Northeast. I never realized how preppy my hometown was until I left. It was typical to see guys wearing pastel pants with whale or swordfish patterns embroidered all over them. And people from my hometown are generally friendly and outgoing, compared to…

Hipsters - seem to have taken over downtown NYC! Rich urban kids who try real hard to look artsy; smoke a lot of cigs and pot, drink lots of PBR, poor hygiene, dress in ratty clothes which are secretly expensive and paid for by daddy, along with their $200k film degrees.

Outdoorsy - someone who enjoys the outdoors; seriously, I can’t imagine why you need this one explained…?

“This thread is a fail. Not to sound rude but none of you answered my question.”

um, maybe you haven’t been on CC for long, but 99% of all threads go off-topic. so, cool it. plus, this is a PLACE for stories, experiences, etc. if you want definitions, you can go to google.

also, i deem YOU a fail, as the thread-starter.

(CC required disclaimer: my opinions. Not necessarily fact)

Hipster – basically, Mary-Kate Olsen or Taylor Momsen. Grunged-out upper-middle-class kids with daintily chipped black nail polish and a Starbucks cup permanently glued to their hands. They listen to obscure music, and take said music very seriously, the minute said musician hits MTV – they’re classified as sell outs and the hipster crew refuses to listen to them anymore.
They consider themselves unique little butterflies who have an artistic eye that only a manic hobo can appreciate, likewise, they strive to dress like a manic hobo. They’re all humanity majors who’re living off their parents dimes and starve themselves to fit into the skinniest skinny jeans and flats.
They smoke more than the Marlboro man and smell like a struggling stripper.

Preppy - Kids whose pants generally fit. They’re the pedigree result of Hahvahd and Yale blue-blood inbreeding and dress as if they’re about to go yachting.
Polos, American Eagle, Abercrombie (depending who you ask).
Minorities scare them.

Outdoorsy - Tree-hugging granola crunchers who will wear open-toed sandals year-round and will dismiss the fact that their feet resemble blocks of cement and should probably not be on public display.
They can be found humping a rock in the middle of the woods while crying about the unfortunate death of Bambi and chomping on a three year-old Kashi bar.
They require that everything they touch be organic and will not hesitate to lecture about the horrors of chemicals and consuming meat.
They snub vegetarians because vegetarians are so half-assed. Vegans all the way.
They like to eat food with corny play-on-word e.g. “Not dogs,” and “Tofutti”
They generally smell and can be found in parading in tie-dye shirts and organic cotton blend khakis.

^ this is the most accurate description so far.

other stereotypes that could be added:
jocks, geeks, the normal kids, i can’t think of any more.

^^ hahaha

Hipsters also tend to be those kids who think wearing checkered shirts year round with the fluorescent sunglasses and the dog chewed converse sneakers. They were beanies year round to cover their unwashed hair as a sign of nonconformity.

Preppy kids usually are those who only shop at H&M, Ambercrombie, Juicy couture Then whine to their parents about how they need money after they spent 1000 dollars on one outfit they had to wear that night. Code words they use: Legit i.e that party was like so legit. synonym for great, cool, serious

outdoorsy: see above poster

whats the stereotype for a normal kid?

Don’t forget the Scene kids.

Preppy- Usually wear Ralph Lauren, Lilly, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, LL Bean. Shops at the traditional places like Saks, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, and Neiman Marcus. Usually has pastel colors, khaki pants, pearl necklaces, popped collar and wears little make up. They consider themselves “old money” and lives in New England, The Hampton’s and The Upper East Side in NYC. They tend to be very proper and conservative. Their kids tend to be spoiled and go to elite private schools and ivy leagues. Some are snobs others are very polite.

Hipsters: Are the androgynous type. Men are feminine in look and very thin wearing skinny jeans and other tight clothing. The women are out-spoken and wear raggedy clothes. They love Starbucks, indie music, and anything non mainstream. They frequent Urban Outfitters, A&F, and other stores offering vintage clothes. They can be seen in mainly in NYC neighborhoods like Greenwich village and SoHo. They consider themselves underground and hate the commercial mainstream world.

Outdoorsy" Kids: ^

can we get a normal kid stereotype?

No true preppy kid would be caught dead in Abercrombie crap.
