So, student council at my school is taken really seriously and is a huge time commitment. It’s set up as a class (Leadership Skills I, II, III, IV) and only offered junior and senior year. I’m going into my junior year and I was supposed to be taking APUSH, AP lit, AP Calc AB, and Leadership skills I & II in school, with AP physics as an online class to take after school. Now there’s a scheduling error where I will have to take APUSH online in order to keep student council, which I’m not sure if I’m comfortable with for a lot of reasons, like the fact that APUSH in a classroom setting would be the only class I would have with a lot of my friends, and I learn better when I’m able to discuss rather than just read off of a computer screen, etc. My other option would be to drop student council in order to take APUSH in a classroom setting. I think if I do this then I would be able to fit in a 5th AP class, possibly AP chemistry? Would it be better for me to stay in student council for the EC and possible leadership positions (student body president, Vice President, cabinet member etc that MIGHT happen) and just take APUSH online, or quit student council and take another AP class in its place in order to have APUSH in a classroom setting. How valuable is student council as an EC? For context, I’m hoping to go into the medical field, so it’s not entirely relevant to my future major, but it’s also in the same realm as some of my other “irrelevant” leadership positions just because I love organizing events etc. Also, the Leadership Skills I & II classes are NOT for honors or AP credit, so I would be taking at least the 1st semester pass/fail to prevent it from negatively affecting my GPA as much. So, in short - would it be better to take 4 APs and two semesters of Student Council or 5 APs and quit student council?
It seems like both options are fairly viable; I think it’s gonna come down to which of them you’re more passionate about.
So taking a non-AP class as an upperclassman won’t look sketchy to admissions officers? I don’t want it to look like I’m taking something easy
You’re already taking several APs, though! Better to not be a robot. Trust me.
Do you want to take student council? Or are you taking it just to impress colleges? If the latter, it’s totally fine if you do not take it. If you really want to take it though, I suggest you do because you already have a heavy courseload.
as someone who’s taken leadership (equivalent of student council) and online college classes both, i would pick leadership, especially if you’re passionate about it. it’s a once in a lifetime experience to be a part of the behind-the-scenes and to help create the events your school puts on, whereas you’ll most likely be taking history as part of your gen ed classes. online classes are kind of iffy and in my experience your focus tends more toward the grade than the material, even if you’re excited more about the latter than the former. plus, with all that load, leadership gives you time to destress (sorta)!
ap chem is an arguably more fun class than apush, and has more relevancy to the medical field. food for thought
thanks @desideratum ! I think I’m going to end up takingg student council, but if I do I won’t be able to take AP chemistry, and will have to take APUSH online no matter what (I need a history class to advance to the next grade). sorry if my post was unclear haha
ahhh okay! what science classes are offered to you this year and next?
and yeah makes sense xD our school has the history requirement too.
@desideratum I’m taking AP physics online after school, but my other options besides that would be to take AP Biology online after school (online classes that require a lot of reading abt the concepts aren’t really for me tho, which is why I’m iffy about taking APUSH online) or take AP chemistry in a classroom setting if I quit student council. I took bio & chem honors in the past and took APES last semester so there’s sadly not much else offered thru my school
