Student Handbook

Hey, so I'm just wondering if anyone attending Penn this fall has received their student handbook already because I just got an email from my academic advisor and he was like oh hi pleasure meeting you blah blah blah if you have any questions email me and be sure to go through you student handbook and I NEVER RECEIVED ANYTHING AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

which school are you in?

If you are in the college, they are on the way. They were sent earlier this week. You’ll also be hearing from your peer advisers soon.

Quick Question: Do all students get emails from their acedemic advisors? I’m out of the country at the moment and I was wondering if I could talk to my advisor solely via email since international calling is quite expensive.

All College Students (can’t speak for other schools) will be contacted by their academic advisor hopefully by the end of the week (if they haven’t already). You’ll be able to sort out how your conversation will go with your advisor, it shouldn’t be a problem.

okay thanks for the replies you guys and this might be a stupid question but what does the academic advisor…do? I’m just really confused lol because I feel like I have like 20 million advisors and I dont know what to do with them all!!! and im in the college btw

The academic advisor is the person who you need to talk to in order to schedule your courses. (S)he listens to your academic interests and the courses you would like to take before giving you advice about how to go about requesting the courses. You’ll also get advice about courses which may not be so good for you. It’s important to note that this advice will seem STUPID, especially if you’ve done your research and figured out which courses you definitely want to take. That said, listen to your advisor… you won’t regret it.

Are Academic Advisors the same as Pre-Major advisors?

Yes…

I got the handbook but never was contacted by my advisor… I’m guessing I’ll just fill out the questionaire thing that comes out on the 15th and email my advisor then?

He’ll get to you eventually. If your peer advisor has contacted you, send him/her an email about it and they can help you out.

Ok still not contacted by either advisor… I’m just going to fill out the questionaire and email my pre-major advisor I guess.
I’m in the vagelos program; do they have a different advising system or something?

are you in vagelos mls or lsm?

If you are in Vagelos MLS, then your advisor will either be Ponzy Lu or Jeffrey Saven. Either Leslie or Ponzy should email you the appropriate information eventually, but you are to contact your advisors to remove registration hold…

If you are in Vagelos LSM, I believe that you have specific advisors that are within the program. I don’t know any details them.

I’m in MLS and yea Jeffrey Saven is my premajor advisor. I spoke with Leslie earlier (like 1 month ago) and she said she would send me more information soon… but that was one month ago…

From what I understand from the vagelos website the first year is pretty much set so there’s not much for me to choose other than one elective per semester and what placement I want.

Tevash should I just email Jeffrey now or fill out the questionaire first?

Basically what ends up happening is that Ponzy and Saven will both be your advisor. They will alternate semesters so you will have Ponzy as your advisor for Spring Semester.

You can fill out the questionnaire now, but I don’t think it really does anything. As for Saven, you can email him now I guess and setup the phone thing. Its really pretty informal and he’ll most likely just okay everything.

Did you receive the massive peer advisor email?

I haven’t received any sort of email from anyone. I just got the student handbook thing in the mail.

Hmm…then its probably still too early in the summer right now.

You will eventually receive a massive collective email from the Vagelos peer advisors giving alot of advice on courses and such.

Closer to the beginning of the academic year, Ponzy will send you the books that you need as well as the Scavenger Hunt (due first day of classes…and also quite frustrating / maddening…you will see what I mean)
