Student income questions

I just started working at a restaurant 5 months ago, and I have made about $1000 total. Do I have to file a tax return? If so, how? I know this sounds stupid, but I am hopelessly uninformed about the FAFSA and CSS, so I want to make sure I get everything right. Also, we live in a condo, and my parents pay mortgage every month, so we don't "own" our house, technically. Should we still say we do if we're paying towards it?

A house or condo with a mortgage is still considered as owned by the family.

Is that $1000 your only income in 2013? If so you wouldn’t have to file. However, are taxes being withheld from your paycheck? If so, you would want to file to get the withheld amount back as a refund. Most likely you can file form 1040ez. Can you talk to your parents about how to file? Do they do their own taxes or take them somewhere? But 1040ez is so easy people here could help you.

Here’s the form:

Here are the instructions:

Does your state have an income tax? If so you should check on that too though if $1000 is your total income you probably wouldn’t have to file. But again, were state taxes withheld from your paycheck?
