How easy is it to find a student job at the University? I was originally offered a work-study in my financial aid package, but it got modified and taken away. Are there other jobs available? If not, how easy is it to find and maintain a job somewhere in the city? As a freshman, would I even have time for such a thing?

bump...............

also, when do you usually apply for work study jobs?

I don't have any personal experience w/ work study, but I know people who have done it and it's usually a pretty good experience. Working in obscure libraries seems like a popular choice (since I guess you're paid just to sit there). I think there's a work study website, just google it. And you apply from there. For main library jobs (or other libraries, don't know), you can go to the Moffit Library (ugrad library) and get an application. You should probably start looking and filling out apps when you get to campus, but I'm pretty sure you can apply throughout the year.

I think maintaining a job in the city your first year is a bit much unless it's purely a weekend thing. I had a job both my semesters in my first year; first semester I worked at the Student Store (don't, unless you really need a job!) and second semester I found a paid internship that I could do from my laptop (I found this internship at the Early Bird Internship Fair on campus in the fall)

Work study pays better than menial jobs that aren't work study though (e.g., I made $7.50/hr at the Student Store whereas most work study is about $10/hr. Although, I make more now at my internship so it doesn't matter I guess)

I think working 10-15 hrs a week is doable, but definitely not more than 15.

sweetdreams, why do you not recommend working at the student store?
what was your experience there like?

Oh, the people are really nice and the manager liked me a lot (even though I was late quite a few times...) The student store has an insanely high turnover rate, so I think it's safe to say that people aren't really happy working there; it's a good place to start (they hire A LOT in the first few weeks) but you don't want to stay there

They gave me a little bit more hours/week than I wanted (usually around 14 and I wanted, like, 10). Also, in the fall, you almost always have to work football Saturdays so you don't get to see the games. The pay is abysmal ($7.50); you can get better than that at any other retail store in the Berkeley area, I would think at least. It's boring as hell when the store's not busy, and they don't want you to stand behind the cash register unless you're helping someone, so then you don't know what to do and you end up wandering up and down the aisles fake-straightening things. And standing on your feet for that many hours sucks; you get 15 mins break every 4hrs I think, and 30min lunch if you're working more than 6 (?).

It's not the worst job in the world so take it if you have nothing else. I arrived on campus with 0 work experience and the manager hired me on the spot, so I was grateful for the chance. Just don't expect to stay there very long.

Thanks for your help!

Do you think I should apply for a job now, or after school starts?

Errrr...well, if you want a summer job sure; it's not a bad time to make some money so you can work less during the year. But if you're looking for a job in Berkeley, you can wait until September. Honestly, if you don't need the money very badly, you may as well wait until your second semester.

are library jobs only through work study?
because i heard that htey're easy and you get paid a decent salary
but i dont have work study

Yeahhhh I'm 95% sure library jobs are all work study jobs (b/c I'd love one myself, but I don't have work study either...)
