Student Life and Charlottesville

Hey all, I'm an accepted Echols from the northeast heading down to DotL on the 14th. This will be my first time at UVa (planes are expensive!) but I've done as much research as I possibly can to assist in the tough decision-making process I'm dealing with right now.

While I've read a bunch about The Corner and the Downtown Mall, I'm still not getting a good enough of a sense about the diversity of the social scene at UVa. I applied to many schools surrounded by larger cities so I could have many options -- I'm really not looking for a party school. And while I'm sure UVa's academics make it a far cry from, say, Animal House, the fact that UVa is 50% Greek and that the Corner and Downtown Mall seem to be only a strip, really, of cool shops, restaurants, and bars, I'm wondering if: a) there is more to these areas than I can gather from the internet and they do play a signifigant role in student life on weekends, for example, b) the Greek scene is the dominating social scene. I just am curious to know that there is a lot to do besides party there, in short. And I'm not talking things like art museums and Monticello, because while I'm sure they're cool and worth a visit, I'm just looking for the normal weekend schedule of a Wahoo. Any information you could ofter about this smorgasbord of random questions would be greatly appreciated!

With about 13,000 students, I'm not sure there IS a standard weekend schedule. Maybe the current students who post here can share what they tend to do on weekends, which will give you a taste of some of the options.

If you want to check out the possibilities, check out this full events calendar. You can limit it to return specific sorts of events. There is also a student calendarthat attempts to show all events run by student organizations.

If you want to get just a taste of what's happening around in the city, check out our two arts weeklies, The Hook and Cville Weekly].

the fact that UVa is 50% Greek

[/QUOTE]
The official number is more like 30-35%.

Thanks for the links, Dean J! And I don't know where from I got that 50% statistic, but I'm glad to see that it's much lower ... that is much more reasonable and much less worrisome (at least, in my case :})

There are over 500 clubs at UVA. Many of which meet during weekends. There are $3 movies on weekends at Newcomb... There's a "hoos sober" mailing list with events (plays/shows, sports, etc) every week... There's so much to do, and never enough time.

^ Agreed, I devoutly wish there was two of me to go to all the events I want to.
