Student Life at Middlebury

Though I am extremely interested in Middlebury’s English and foreign language programs, I am concerned that, coming from a big city, campus life may be a bit too much of a culture shock for me. What is there to do on or around campus? How “in the middle of nowhere” is the college? I’ve also heard that it is extremely preppy, which I’m not sure I would like. Is this true?

Colleges like Middlebury provide so much entertainment and so many cultural and special events on campus that you don’t need the surrounding area to provide any. A college is like a town unto itself.

I thought there was a nice mix of students when we visited. Unlike at most colleges we visited, which tended to look segregated in the dining hall, at Middlebury students were sitting and eating in diverse groups, with members of racial minorities talking happily with white students. We saw two cross-dressers, some hockey players, and a group of kids playing Quidditch. So it seemed diverse.
