Student Life at Notre Dame

Ive applied EA to notre dame to be in the class of 2020. Im confident that I will get in, and I was wondering what a day in the life of a student entails. Also, are students able to take girls back to dorms?

To clarify, I am a guy…

A day in the life varies for many people. I know there are people here who go to class, eat and then sit in their dorms all day. And there are those who get out. Neither is better, but both are present. I was busy this past semester in engineering, AFROTC and Marching Band. People really get out and explore whatever interests them, and manage to fit it all in.

Personally, this last semester I had at most four classes a day, sometimes spread out through the day. For instance, my Thursday began at 925 with ROTC class, then went on with Chemistry Lab, Writing and Rhetoric (Intro writing course) and Intro to Engineering, with my academic day ending at 620 pm. Then for most of the semester I had Marching Band practice every week day from 630 to 8 as well, so that was also a factor. Classes are, earliest, 820 on MWF. Whatever free time I had I spent with friends or studying. You will most likely be pretty busy, so the first thing to go (for me) was sleep. I’d say an average of 4-5 hours a night is reality, with the least I’ve ever functioned on was 3. Haven’t pulled an all-nighter yet though. Homework load is fairly heavy per class. What major did you apply as?
If you are not aware yet, there are parietals. These are times where members of one sex are prohibited from being in the others’ dorms, except for the 24 hour space. Sunday through Thursday is 12-9 am, and Friday Saturday is 2-9am. If you are caught breaking parietals, consequences are usually pretty strict. I think it’s after three violations that you are kicked out of University housing.

Football, Church, Rust Belt, repeat.

Thanks, I applied as a business major. From the sound of it there’s a work hard play hard mentality and I really like that… What about a day on the weekend?

You’d probably get more traffic if you posted under the Notre Dame thread, although it doesn’t seem that active. Weekends in the fall seem to revolve a lot around football games. Then there are also the hall dances that occur throughout the year. I assume you are aware of the “residential college” aspect of the school, correct? Have you visited? And you should be aware of parietals. I don’t know how often kids really get kicked out for violating parietals (I think it depends on the dorm/RA/rector) but I believe that drug use will get you kicked out pronto.

ETA: kids are definitely focused on doing well in classes, but from what my D tells me the environment is supportive, not competitive.

Ok, and what is the typical ND guy like. I play basketball in high school, but am a diligent student as well. Is the ND student a smart athlete? A nerd? A jock?

Mixed, absolutely. There are guys who go hard in interhall sports, and there are those who spend their time in Hesburg. Everyone here is definitely above par in terms of academia, but spread their interests around.

Out of curiosity, what makes you confident you will get in?

My 34 on the act, my being in the top 5% of my class, my spot on the varsity basketball team, my involvement in my faith…

If I were a business student, how many hours of studying a day should I expect?
