I was wondering if anyone could tell what the student life is like at the University of Hawaii: Manoa, especially in the dorms during the summer?

Furthermore, does the same tension exist between the locals and those from the mainland? I've heard that, in the past, some of the locals could be pretty hostile to non-locals due to cultural differences.

Any feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated!

There’s definitely tension, but there a lot of locals who don’t particularly care about the color of your skin. You’ll raise some ire if you use a lot of mainland slang though- you would want to adopt their way of speaking fairly quickly or stand out like a sore thumb. Some of these are flip flops = slippers; snow cones = shave ice, etc.

I’ve heard of racial incidents with some professors, but I think that’s mostly confined to UH Hilo. If you’re friendly, welcoming, and (this one’s important) HIGHLY adaptable, you should do fine.

(I don’t know anything about the dorms since I never lived in them, sorry. I did, however, live in a non-UH dorm with lots of UH students and things were fine.)

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.
