awm - why not explain what an actuary does and what skills are needed in order to become one? This may also explain why you selected FSU as opposed to other schools. I kind of doubt it was because you like garnet and gold... ;)

I'm not taking the honors class because I didn't want the Friday class.

Actuaries analyze risk. They work in the insurance industry, consulting, and sometimes government positions. In order to be an actuary, first and foremost you need to be good at math. You need to enjoy working with math and statistics. There are a series of exams (much harder than anything you will take in college, except maybe Dr. Paris's MAP 4170 and 4175) that you must take in order to achieve Associate and Fellow designation in either the SOA or CAS (actuarial societies, health/life and property/casualty, respectively). Writing skills and interpersonal skills are also a must if you want to go very far.

I chose FSU for their well-established Actuarial Science major and support system. They have one-hour tutorials geared towards preparing for exams, they have the VEE requirements covered if you take the right classes (although so does UF), and they have an entire major devoted to going into this profession. UF has a minor, but their program is not nearly as comprehensive or as supportive. For those reasons, FSU is the only school to which applied.

I am also beginning study in Chinese and will be going to China this summer with FSU's study abroad program. There are plenty of opportunities at FSU; it's just a matter of knowing how to take advantage of them. I think that a lot of people in my Chinese class do not understand that it takes much more preparation than what is required in the class to learn this language, and as a a result they will do the minimum that is required to do well in the class and never really become very good at communicating in Chinese. I'm basing this on the fact that my friend is in higher level classes and has seen this. This is just one example of kids not knowing how to properly take advantage of opportunities at FSU. It would be a shame to go to China and only hang around Americans, which is what many of them will do. That's not really immersion.

Unless you got a 5 on AP Biology, you'll have to take Bio I & II. If you got a 5, you won't need to take either.

^ excellent post!

This is how current students can help those trying select a university or major. :)

I got a 1490/1600. Yeah I got a 5 on my bio AP and Chem

I read somewhere that medical schools rather you take classes at the college level weather it was AP or not so I think im just going to take them anyway. I'm not in a rush I just want to make sure I get the right classes and requirements for medical school.

You've got some AP credit coming...have you talked with Honors?

Another student life realted question....

How crazy are the football games(and basketball too)? How rowdy do the fans get? School spirit is a must, and it seems that FSU has a lot of that.

Current students can answer better, but according to my daughters - they stand up at all the fb games and cheer the whole game. Bb games are similary energetic. The Chiefs march around campus and play before big games...pretty neat.

It's probably a good idea to take those classes again, especially if you're not sure if you remember all of the material. However, accepting the AP credit for classes not essential to your major shouldn't be a big deal and will let you take more of the things you want to take (unless you want to take those classes again, too).

Parent 2 I'm curious. Illinois just had to dump their mascot, the latest in a long list of changes at HS's and college under pressure of sanctions. Is FSU under similar pressure from the NCAA or are they the next target?

PARENT2NOLES can better answer but I believe the Seminole Tribe supports the University's use of its name because of a longstanding respectful relationship. There already had been a challenge by the NCAA in 2005 but it was determined that FSU could continue to use the name and symbol.

<a href="http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2005-08-23-fsu-mascot-approved_x.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2005-08-23-fsu-mascot-approved_x.htm</a></p>

Florida State was granted explicit permission to use the Seminole name and the various symbols by the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma.

The NCAA initially asked FSU about the symbols, but both tribes supported the university. The NCAA then backed off.

FSU owes both tribes for this support and will not forget it.

I think I am going to take them over, I just don't want to take any chances and make it look like i just didnt want to do it, I would save me alot of time but sometimes thats not always good.

Here's one tribute to the Seminole tribes by FSU: <a href="http://unirel.fsu.edu/seminoles/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://unirel.fsu.edu/seminoles/index.html</a></p>

so what happens with summer aid? do if we go for a summer term for six weeks who pays for that, its only six weeks of aid and then again in the fall?

Bright Futures will not cover summer terms, for your information. If you go for a term of six weeks, you will need to pay per course hour you are taking along with a transportation fee I believe, and you can get some other form of aid to cover that if it is available to you.

I wasn't thinking bright futures away, I was thinking fin aid period.

Have they offered you the University Scholarship? I would think they would.
$9600 over 4 years.

We got an e mail back yesterday that FSU had received the updated marks and would render a decison on 3/28. So we are inside of a month I guess for the kids to learn their fate.

Ray, lots of luck on having your child accepted to FSU. Keep trying...

If things don't work out the way you want, many kids who do not make it as a freshman attend Tallahassee Community College and then transfer over to FSU with an AA.

To the best of my knowledge, TCC is a so-called "feeder" community college into FSU. The kids are part of the FSU social scene for the most part and have a good chance of matriculation as an upper-division student into the college they want at FSU.
