I’m interested in JHop, but have heard some negative things regarding the atmosphere of the school. It seems to be extremely academically focused with little to no time spent on students enjoying themselves. Can anyone weigh in on the social experience at JHop? I understand it has outstanding academics, but as a social person, I don’t want to spend all day everyday studying.
Thanks!

Hopkins has a undeserved reputation for being an un-fun or socially dead campus. In reality, students at Hopkins have fun and are able to enjoy themselves socially (whatever that means for them). There’s a party scene, lots of student organization events, and plenty of things to do off campus in Baltimore or DC.
One thing that is true though is that Hopkins students (for the most part) make school the top priority. So you will never be shamed for staying in because you have exams or assignments due.
My co-worker’s younger brother is a senior at JHU this year. I remember hearing that when he was a freshman he could never get anyone to go do anything (go out to eat, go to a movie, etc.) - all of his friends/dormmates were always studying. He was a hard worker too, but wanted to let off steam every once in awhile. It took him some time to find some people who were trying to strike a balance like him, so they are there…maybe just a little harder to find than at other schools.

Both of the above posters make good points. But I agree with Saif235 more. There will always be people studying here, no matter what. But there’s also a good amount of people who like to have fun. You’ll find your people.
