Okay so this fall I am starting college and I filled out Fasfa and it covered tuition, it even says ill get $1,300 that was left over. But as I read online I will not see that money till around September. But I need money within the next couple months to start getting my school supplies and what not. So if I get Stafford Loan it sends it to my school right? and will I get that money now or will it come with my fasfa money. Should I just get private loan? I am only looking to borrow 2-3k to get decent laptop and school supplies.Serious answers please, please dont say "Get A Job".

Why is that not a serious answer? You are expected to contribute to your own education (generally, through a job). Many schools (even the most generous) expect you to get your own supplies as part of your contribution.

Some schools have temporary loans for when things are tight (for example, my U has a 60 day loan that is automatically paid off when you get your financial aid refund). Look at your school. You are likely not going to find any private loans and your school will probably be your best bet.

Well I cant get a job because i am also doing sports. I do plan on getting a job over summer and will in college on weekends at least. But i need the loan before school.

Madrid, will you be graduating? Any chance of receiving graduation gifts? You may find that you will be able to pull enough money together by August if you work this summer. The best sales on computers is usually back to school/college time with good deals anyway. Don’t buy too early. Notebooks are easy enough to get the week before school. Books can be ordered online or bought at school a couple weeks before school starts. That gives you most of the summer to save. Don’t go for loans that then you are going to have to repay - try to save, or even see if a family member can float you a bit of money. Easier to repay a family member back slowly as you can during college.

You really don’t need to start getting books until late August. Schools are not allowed, by federal regulation, to disburse funds earlier than 10 days prior to the start of the semester. Many/most will wait until after the drop/add period but some will allow students to charge their books to their student aid account through the bookstore.

As far as the computer, etc. goes, every school has computers available for student use. If you want your own before your refund becomes available, save your graduation/scholarship/work money and buy one! No need to be rude to veterans here who have already been through the maze and are trying to share their wisdom and experience.

Will yeah I could ask my aunt but i kinda wanted to do this without their help…

I’m a little confused. You say you filled out the FAFSA and IT covered a lot.

Have you received a financial aid offer from the college you will be attending? The colleges provide the aid, FAFSA is a form to collect financial information.

If you are attending a school that is a FAFSA only school, there is a strong likelihood the school will NOT meet your full need.

Once you have received your aid award from your SCHOOL you will then know how much you will need to earn.

Re: getting a job…you may find you need to work during college to make ends meet financially. Many students work while in college.
