Student Loans Exhausted

My college withdrew me from my current classes before I had even posted anything with the explanation that I was out of funds because it took six years instead of four. This was untrue since I took a year off yet, somehow they claimed ALL my student loans and Pell grant money during the entire six years. Now I only need four more classes for my Bachelors Degree in Psychology. Where can I go to request more aid in order to complete this program and continue on for my Masters? I am a disabled veteran living on 841.00 monthly and no GI Bill funds either. To add insult to injury, my school claimed it was not required to return the remaining funds already accepted and kept over 1200.00 for no reason as well as withdrawing me. I am devastated and totally heartbroken at this failure. Is there help out there for someone like me? Will anyone take a chance on me? Please help. Thank you.

It seems to me that you need someone to help you understand what has happened, as well as to assist you in moving forward. Does your school have a Veteran’s Office? If so, begin there - ask for their help. If not, contact your aid office & ask to speak with the customer service manager … tell them that you are confused and would like to sit down with someone in charge who can explain what is happening & help you fix things. My best to you.

Is this an online for-profit school?

Sounds like a for-profit outfit. As the name “for profit” indicates, they’re not in it to educate you, but to make money off of you.
Check to see if there are class actions or wider complaints about them.
If you give us their name some people on this forum may have experience with them.

Yes it is a for profit school. Kaplan University. I have spoken to a financial aid rep is how they even withdrew me when I asked about exhausting my aid and why six years aid was used up in five. Thanks for the advice and support. I have been upset for awhile now.

Now all my account history has disappeared. It now looks as though I only attended and withdrew this term. But I still have a balance of ten dollars so they can hold my transcript hostage. I never posted and withdrew in the first week of my assigned classes.

Google the name of the Attorney General in your state and send an email detailing your problem- dates of payments, when you enrolled/unenrolled, etc. Make it succinct but provide the facts.

There is likely to be a person in that office who is in charge of consumer fraud- and has likely dealt with complaints about this college already.

Hugs to you and thank you for your service.

This is fraud, and for profit outfits are well-known for that.
Follow Blossom’s advice.
I’m so sorry they took advantage of you like this. Hopefully you’ll get that 6th year of funding reinstated and you’ll be able to finish your degree at a real college.
Take screen shots of everything on your account, every time you check.
Record every conversation on your phone.

To any students reading this: DO NOT attend “for profits” ever - they’re upfront about it, they’re in it for the profits, not for your education. :frowning:

Oh, my … I am so sorry this has happened to you. Go to www.nslds.ed.gov. You will be able to look up your financial aid history. Post here with the total amount of loans you have borrowed to date, as well as the total % Pell you have used to date. Once you have posted that info, we’ll go from there.

I am sorry but unless there is a way to add as an attachment, the MyStudentData report is rtefused as it is almost 20,000 characters long

Here is a link that may work;

Sorry that still does not work

lol, next time I will follow instructions better. Dean’s List yet cannot read!

wrong thread!

How can that be when I am the originator of this thread?

Is this for undergrad? @kelsmom is it possible, that this student has exceeded the aggregate amount of Stafford loans for an independent undergrad at $59,693?

yes, it is possible

Students and former students against Kaplan University on Facebook…they contain similar stories to mine…running out of funds with only a few classes remaining to complete their degrees. There are a lot of class action lawsuits against them in many states. I have alerted our Attorney General per advice received here.

How much do your last 4 classes cost?

What do you plan to do with a future degree in psychology?

As a disabled veteran myself, I had hoped to continue for my Masters and help veterans with their adjustments upon coming home forever changed. I was told 7500.00 would complete my Bachelors however. I would hope to earn a scholarship that might help some as I have made the Deans List and was invited to become a member of the Veterans Honor Society. Fellow veterans there are also searching for help for me.

Please understand, I have been on disability myself for over twenty years. Not only have I been promised my clinical hours here where I have been treated but, with a Masters I could also teach others so that there would be more help for the future. I would get to stop feeling a burden and be able to leave behind a legacy for others. When I say this is my dream I mean it deeply.
