What is the maximum in student loans you can take out? Are they only given to need based students or can any student take the maximum amount to help pay? Also, if you are not eligible for a parent plus loan is the student eligible to recieve a higher loan amount?
For freshmen, the maximum Direct Loan, which is a loan in the student name only, is $5500.
If your parent applies for and does not qualify for a Plus Loan, you are eligible for an additional $4000.
These are for all students…not based on need for unsubsidized loans.
Are we talking a dependent, or independent student (generally 24 or older)?
dependent student
Senior in high school?
yes, sccepted to PITT
Are you in state for Pitt? Are you planning to live at home and commute? How much can your parents pay each year for 4 years? How much do you have saved from your summer job? What is your estimated FAFSA EFC?
You can only borrow $5,500 as a frosh…how will the rest get paid? Are you instate or OOS

I’m applying to swanson for engineering, do I have a chance at getting into main? Or if not, will I automatically have a chance to get into arts and sciences and then transfer to engineering?

Approximately how accurate is your EFC to what you actually need to pay a year at PITT?

You’d probably get better answers if you put all info in one thread.
Are you instate?
Your chances of getting into Pitt Eng’g isn’t great…are you instate? Your math score is an issue.
What was your math on your ACT?
You should retake SAT. Work with a tutor on math especially. The deadline for merit consideration is Jan 15. Your GPA and rank are excellent, if you got over 1400 on M & CR you would qualify for honors college and might get some merit. With the math score now I don’t think you have a good chance for engineering.
Did you say you were accepted to Pitt main, Swanson school of engineering?
If you are not accepted into engineering or can’t afford $30,000 instate and more for OOS, then another option would be Pitt regional campus and then transfer to main after 2 years. There is a lower threshhold for merit and you might qualify for $5,000, but even with $9,500 in loans and that there would still be a gap unless you can commute.
What is your EFC, would you qualify for Pell and if instate, PA grant?
She did get accepted into the engineering school. I am trying to get all the info I can to budget for the upcoming years. Thank you for your input.
So is this the student’s or parent’s account?!
parent
Confusing because in your post quoted in #8 you say “I am applying to Swanson for engineering”. Thanks for clearing that up.
So she was accepted to U Pitt Johnstown? In another thread you asked about transferring to main campus?
Do you live close enough so that she can commute to UPJ?
That way the loans of $9,500 plus maybe a small merit award would cover tuition.
But in the last two years she would pay $18k for tuition alone at Pitt main, plus she would need money for housing and food. How would this work out? She can borrow maximum of $12,500 junior and senior year of college.
Do you think you would qualify for any federal or state aid?
What kind of engineering does she want to study? Does she have any other interests?

Also, if you are not eligible for a parent plus loan is the student eligible to recieve a higher loan amount?

Is the parent not a citizen or green card holder?
I’m sorry…is yoir question what happens if you are denied a Plus Loan? Or are you asking about what happens if the person is not eligible to apply for a Plus?
