Hey guys! I’m not a big sports fan, but I heard going to games are a good way to socalize in college. How big of a deal are football games? what about hockey and football? Is it worth while to buy season tickets? Will I be seated alone if I order alone?
It is a great way to socialize, but sports are not the end-all-be-all here that it is for a lot of colleges. You will get a seat in the student section, so you will be sitting with other students, and after two or three games, you’ll likely get to know your neighbors.
Usually, hockey is the top dog here, followed by basketball. Football had been third, but coach kill does seem to be building a good thing, and the outdoor stadium has brought back some pride.
If you think you enjoy it, then go ahead, but you really won’t be out of the loop if you don’t go to any games, or just a single game here and there. And don’t rule out other programs either- the women’s hockey program is huge here, and there are devoted gymnastics or swimming fans.
I guess I’m just saying do what you think you’d like. That way you’d be socializing with folks who like the same thing. 
Football games are huge, especially among freshman. Hockey and basketball all depend on how the team is doing.
Definitely buy season tickets. They are the second cheapest in the Big 10 and they have a new stadium and are an exciting team.
Seating in the student section is general admission
Right now football is biggest by a long shot. It’s not even close.
Don’t bother with football - Gopher women’s hockey is where it’s at. They have dominated the NCAA for a few years now. Clinched the title this year by trouncing Harvard 4-1.
Good thing they’re free…

Does everyone in Admissions share your view I wonder?
Just an idea. My son his freshman and sophomore year was a gopher greeter. He had to go to the football games a couple hours early and handed out buttons, or gave directions etc. He also had to work at a couple of hockey and basketball games. Tickets were free, and he had fun. At the football games, the greeters sat right behind the band (or should I stand since students never sit). He graduated May 2014 but I think they still have this program. He really wasn’t into sports, but enjoyed this (especially the first year). Check it out to see if they still offer this if you are interested.
