Students at Carnegie Mellon

Hi guys, I don’t know if this has been asked before, but what is the overall vibe of the students at Carnegie Mellon? I’m applying ED to the SCS and I feel statistically I should be considered, but I feel apprehensive about whether I will fit in socially. I’m a pretty social guy and I like sports a lot, but I guess I’m just afraid there might not be people like me or there will be very few. Like I’m coming to learn primarily, but I don’t want to be miserable and have no friends that share the same interests with me if you know what I mean. And I’m sorry if I’m stereotyping, it’s just what I hear around, so just wanted to ask.

Thanks!

CMU - specifically engineering and CS - is know for being hyper competitive and stressful.

Thanks, I guess it’s a bit too late to back out now lol, but I’ll see how it goes if in any way i get in.

You’ll be fine. It’s a big enough school with lots of activities, including sports. And plenty of social activities, including a Greek scene.

I know a couple friends of mine that were apprehensive about CMU, due to it’s reputation of being nerdy and anti-social. Honestly though, it’s what you make of it. We are all nerdy, but perhaps not in the traditional book nerd sense (of course those exist), rather in the “we are all passionate about something” sense. This makes conversation with people really interesting, considering CMU’s diversity in not only race, but also the range of top-notch programs. You’ll definitely find people that share your interests!

I have so much more to say, but I’d rather not write a whole essay here. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the social scene here!

Thank you! That’s really good to hear.

SCS student here. No, people are social and friendly. You will form a lot of close friends pulling close all nighters doing math HW =).
