CMU's Social Life

How is the Greek life at CMU? Are there many parties? Is the campus lively during the day? Are there nice areas on campus where students can just hang around, socialize, etc. (ie. "The Beach" at JHU)? Can I expect to find an entire spectrum of different people (not only by their races but interests outside of CS, engineering, theater, etc.)? Any insight would be wonderful. I'm now seriously considering whether CMU is the right school for me, but I will definitely have to visit and get the feel.

Definitely visit but check out the admissions website too and even www.pittsburgh.org :) I bumped the social thread for you too.

AcceptedAlready, thanks for all the great information. Honestly, I'm really, really excited to visit CMU whenever I can (on the specified visiting day in April). I think it was the e-suds that sold me, lol! But I will definitely, definitely be visiting, but I do have a few questions:

What are the requirement course for MCS? I came across a webpage on CMU's website (not sure if it was Chemistry-major specific--which is my intended major--or just MCS students in general) that described the typical course schedule for the first two semesters (maybe have been more, but I remember seeing the first two semesters). Most were math and science courses in a single semester, and I think I saw an optional [writing] seminar. This seems really interesting, because I'm really interested in going in depth and expanding my interests in math and science. But this brings me to my next question:

If I choose to become a part of the Scholars Program, will I be required to take specific humanities classes? I haven't decided whether I want to take a language course (and if there is a requirement, I guess it won't kill me.) However, I'm interested in taking literature and writing classes and other social science-related courses. Thanks!

The requirement courses for MCS are in the undergrad catalog. http://www.cmu.edu/esg-cat/

Yes, you will take certain HSS requirements (I believe) but they are mostly easy and GPA boosters. I mean you get stuff like seminar/interpretation and argument/etc.

Try to visit soon if you can (the weather is amazing and all these hot chicks came out that have been apparently hibernating in the winter) :)

Also, are SHS students automatically put into a certain dorm building? Or is it on a first-come-first-serve basis?

Yes, New House 5 (consistently the most social) dorm as there are no CS/CIT/Techy people :) Half the floor right now is in frats and party on weekends.

I also noticed that major requirements start right away, and it seems as though it would be inconvenient to internally transfer to a different school and switching majors. I may have misinterpreted the data, but that is how I perceived it. Can you explain? Thanks!

There are certain things you have to complete in freshman year like freshman seminar (duh) but other requirements can be taken whenever (just don't delay it too much).
