Student's Grade Level in College in 2022–23 (question 29) on FAFSA

Hello,
I am a transfer student from a foreign college. I have attended school there for 2 years, but after taking some time off want to continue studying in the US.
I am filling out the FAFSA form, but confused about question 29. What should I answer here?
Student’s Grade Level in College in 2022–23 (question 29)
Never attended college/1 year
Attended college before /1 year
2nd year
3rd year
and so on…

I answered “Attended college before /1 year”

Assuming you are a US citizen. If you completed two years of school, wouldn’t you be an incoming 3rd year?

Regardless, at all of the schools you consider transferring to, you should sign up for a transfer admissions session and speak with a transfer admissions officer. You will find that there is great variance as to the credits that schools will grant for prior college classes…knowing this before applying/transferring will allow you to make the decision that maximizes credits earned.

Thank you for your reply. Not a US citizen, but a permanent resident. I will contact an admissions officer.

the amount you are allowed to borrow on a student loan depends on your standing in school. The number of credits you are allowed to transfer will determine this. If you put the wrong year on your FAFSA, the school will make the correction before processing the loan.

My daughter took a semester off so she changed from a 2nd year to 3rd year in Jan. She qualified to borrow the extra $500/sem, so we just asked FA to make that adjustment. It wasn’t a problem.
