Students hiring others to write their college essays?

How common is this???
I just overheard someone at my school talking about how he paid a friend a sum of money to write his college admission essays (-__-)
Call me retarded, but i NEVER thought anyone would do this! i just dont think its fair..but is this a common thing to do?
and colleges must be smart enough to know something like that can occur...do they have some system set up to know when an essay is not written by the applicant?

-_-…

It’s unethical and a fairly stupid idea.

No one wants to read another generic essay. They would be better off showing their own voice and stories.

why not ? It’s not like they will ever find out, or care.

-__-" personally i know i could never do this because i’d keep wondering if i really deserved into get into the colleges. But, the colleges have absolutely no way to figure out that someone did this. Unless ofcourse an applicant writes an amazing essay, yet has extremely low grades in english/extremely low SAT CR and W scores (may raise suspicion). However, the best college essays represent the applicant in a unique way that no other person can do. This is also why ad coms don’t look at essays as much as other aspects of one’s application.

I never thought someone would actually do that. This is so sad. Colllege essays are supposed to reflect your own voice:/.

Absolutely unethical and pointless. Seriously. Everyone can write a good essay; it just takes a bit of time and inspiration. It took me months to craft my special essay and I made it to the schools I wanted to go to. My advice to rising hs seniors: Don’t do it. As much as tempting it sounds, colleges know that’s not your voice. And besides, if you’re truly deserving and honest, good fortune will come your way :]

If someone paid me to write their college essays, I would write them really crappy on purpose.

Yup, I heard of it.

I don’t like it at all… >.>

I’m pretty sure adcoms are experienced enough nowadays to tell when an essay is a generic product paid for by a lazy bum.

This made me laugh :):

yup there are cases like that, but it would be really stupid to do so
