Students: The negative reviews you leave can come back to haunt you

I was just reading through some reviews of schools that my daughter was accepted to. I noticed a pattern, that being that negative reviews were left by students who never attended the schools. How do I know? Because some were left on Facebook and other social media sites and your page is not private. So I just wanted to offer some advice:

  • If you left a negative review remove it if you can, the same way that I was able to follow the trail other schools, colleges and prospective employers can follow the trail as well.
    • If you are upset that you were not accepted by that particular school, trying to get even by trashing that schools reputation will not help you. That school was just not meant for you. Accept it and move on.
    • Prospective schools/colleges/employers will see that you are not a positive person and will not want you tainting their environment.
    • If the review is true it still not be a wise decision to leave a negative review if you are not established in your career yet.
  • If you are a parent who is upset because your child is upset, I get that. We hurt when our children hurt. A better way of dealing with this is modeling positive behavior and how to handle disappointment.
    • Even if you did attend that school and hated it, leaving a negative review may not be the way to go, especially if you left your identity wide open for the world to see.
    • Some reviews discuss second or third hand incidents that may have happened to someone they know. You don't have the whole story since you were not there. Yup, he should have been expelled because he was caught with drugs. Some schools have a zero tolerance for certain things and do not have to give a second chance because your parents paid your tuition. This sense of entitlement blows me away.

Good luck to you all!

Great points!
