Can anyone comment on the studio art program at Wheaton?

My daughter applied for studio art. Does anyone know anything about this program?

I am a senior and a studio art major here at Wheaton. I chose to go to Wheaton over the Rhode Island School of Design because I felt that the art department had a more personal and supportive feel to it. I also enjoy taking studio classes with non studio majors such as Biology and Physiology students because their diverse academic backgrounds create a very dynamic classroom.

Wheaton offers classes in sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, drawing, photography and film and animation.

There are also many opportunities for students to do work beyond the classroom. Two summers ago I went with 16 students to The Burren College of Art with two Wheaton professors for the Arts in Ireland program. We had three weeks and our own studios to create a body of work. I love the feeling of being removed from the comfort the classroom and being placed in a foreign landscape. I felt that it enhanced my creativity and allowed me to focus solely on creating work. If you are interested here is a link to the blog we kept while we were there: [Arts in Ireland – Art | Wheaton College](http://wheatoncollege.edu/art/2009/06/16/arts-ireland/)

Wheaton also offers experimental classes such as a printmaking special topics and bookmaking class that was in conjunction with an exhibition design class in the museum studies department program. As a student in both classes, I had the opportunity to create work for the show as well as design and curate the show including writing labels and installing the gallery.

Now I am currently working on my senior seminar, the capstone to my Wheaton education. Each student receives their own studio and has the entire semester to create a cohesive body of work that will be exhibited this April in the Beard and Weil Galleries.
