Wheaton College in Massachusetts has a program where you can get a BA in studio art and if you spend an extra year you can get a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It's a way to get a good liberal arts education and get a BFA (though it takes 5 years). Does anyone know anything about this? Anyone looked into it?

I considered the smfa program for a short time but after learning more information I decided I would much rather go to grad school after graduation. In the program it’s really hard to go without having a car because you start during your junior year. You also can’t choose a lot of the classes you will be taking at smfa. No one has done the program for a number of years so not many people at either schools even have much information on the program.

If you’re serious about art, go to an art school. I had originally wanted to go to art school but ended up going to Wheaton instead, now I’m not sure how prepared I will be for the workforce. Many students can’t even get into an art class until their second or third semester due to high demand.

If you really want a liberal arts education, Wheaton is alright, but as an art school, it can’t compete with a lot of other choices in the area. I know I sound a little harsh but sometimes it’s hard to see through the guise of school websites and admission reps.

That’s what I kind of suspected. We’re looking at Wheaton just to say we left no stone unturned, but I will feel more comfortable if my daughter goes for a BFA from the get-go.
