DD is thinking about Vassar because she was told you have both a strong science program and a strong art program. She is into realism and classical representational art. I can see her doing a studio art minor, and likely a bio major. How is this art program in terms of being able to get classes as a non-major? She has had a college level drawing class, but I can easily see her doing the sculpture or painting classes. Any advice/experience?? Thank you!!
One of Vassar’s best thing is the ability to build your college experience to suit you. The distribution requirements mean that you have to take a fair number of classes outside your major/department. So there is no problem doing both. And she’s just in time for the new science building
There is no trouble taking art classes as a non-major, but (there’s always a but, isn’t there?!) I think you have to do Vassar’s first level studio course before you get to go play amongst the other offerings. Theatre does the same, and I believe both departments do it in part as a way to sort out who’s got what sort of background (there is so much variation in what materials / techniques people have been taught) and in part to make sure everybody knows Vassar’s systems / materials / tools / etc. But- I am relying on a partial memory of a conversation from a year ago, so if it’s important, double check with the department directly.
Thank you somuch, collegemom!!!
