i just visited wesleyan this past weekend and loved it. unfortunately i didn't get a chance to see the studio art facilities, or talk to anyone in the program. i'll want to major in studio arts/painting, so this is important. does anyone know anything about the quality of the program or any other information?

I remember being told during my Wesleyan tour that the windows in the studio art building are engineered so that the lighting in the studios remains constant - it doesn't shift as the sun moves across the sky, so if you've got a model set up for a still life or something, you don't need to move it to compensate for the changing shadows.

That's probably not very helpful, but it's a fun fact.

liz, the art program here is VERY rigorous. I know a girl who draws exceptionally, and who had to show an art professor a portfolio to determine whether she would be eligible for INTRO to Drawing I. Also, the teachers here aren't scared to tell you that what you're doing might be wrong. Also, you sometimes draw avoiding things like lines, and there are many 15-second sketches in which you have to capture the form of something extremely quickly. This is all for Intro to Drawing I, keep in mind. Higher-level courses, I imagine, are probably as hard as (if not harder than) Intro to Drawing I. So the quality of the art program is quite exceptional.

thank you! i'm definitely up for that... i talked to one prof, tula telfair, on the phone, and she was quite intense, almost like she was trying to scare me away... haha, still nice though... i just wanted to say yea, it better be challenging, thats why i'm transfering...
but it does sound pretty great, so that is good... now i just have to get into the school...

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya, liz. :)

i'm a potential studio arts major at wes now, and i'm currently taking drawing 1. it's not true that you have to submit a portfolio to get into drawing 1. there are no prerequisites. however, there are prerequisites for subsequent studio art courses. you have to take drawing 1 and create a portfolio of ten pieces which you then submit to the professors of drawing II, painting etc. my professor is fantastic and very intense. it's currently my favorite classe but also one of the hardest i'm taking.
