Yeah :) I'm still wondering if I should apply to Williams... my GPA is REALLY low in comparison to the medium (3.7 WEIGHTED, 3.3 UNWEIGHTED), but I have good SAT scores and whatnot... I'm hoping my art portfolio will help set me apart from the others? Do you think I should even try? I got the Williams booklet in the mail the other day and it looked reallllly nice... and I've been reccomended to come check out Williams if I was interested in say, Wesleyan's studio art programs (not as a major, however)

Will an outstanding art background set me apart? Or is it hopeless to even try with a very subpar GPA? (top 20-25% at best)

precocious, in answer to your questions:
How are the studio arts at Williams?
Excellent. A well funded department. Top notch studio facilities complemented by the three world class museum on or near campus.

Will an outstanding art background set me apart?
Yes, accomplishment and demonstrated interest in any of the arts is a plus for admission.

Would artistic talent compensate for weakness in other areas, e.g. low GPA? It depends on a lot of factors -- essays, recommendations, how good those SAT scores really are, and demographics such as race, economic status, geography. LACs look at the whole picture, not just statistics.

Comparison between Wesleyan and Williams? Art departments are similar, quality of education is similar. Physical environment and pervasive personality are quite different. I think it is possible to be happy at both, but if the choice came down to one or the other you'd have to visit to see which would be a better fit for you.

Do you think I should even try?
Yes. Your GPA won't keep you out of Williams, but if you don't try, for sure you won't get in.

I'm not as optimistic as momrath - I think your GPA and class rank is likely to mean a non-admit at Williams, even with a very strong art portfolio. But I do agree - if you don't apply you'll never know, so why not send in an application if you are interested?

Studio art is a doable double major with just about anything.
A "business" double major at Williams would be tough. It doesn't exist as a major. In fact, very few top colleges offer a business major.

Studio Art at Williams is basically why it is my second choice school (first choice is brown because, among other reasons, you can take classes at RISD)
I was so impressed with the art program when I visited. Plus the Clark art museum is like right on campus and that place was heavenly.
If I get in Williams im def. double majoring studio art and biology.

overboard, Brown was high on my son's list as well. It has a very good art department of its own; however, I'd caution you to research the feasibility of depending too much on RISD to supplement studio courses as we heard repeatedly that it's very difficult to fit RISD class times into a Brown schedule.

Next time you're in W-Town be sure to visit MassMoCA. Actually, it's in nearby North Adams, but it's another world class museum. The Williams College Museum is pretty good too.
