How long does it usually take Tisch to send studio assignments after they have sent formal, official acceptances? Do they have to do it by April 1?

It tends to come about a week after you get the acceptance package. What day did you get that? My guess is that the studio assignment letter will come this week but you could call and ask the time frame.

I also recall at Saturday in the Square that one of the Tisch administrative people had a list of each person's studio and if by some chance your letter has not come, you could find out that way. I know our letter came before the event in my D's year. Actually, I recall that I had called to ask when that letter would come and at the time, it had been mailed already but we didn't have it yet and they told me the studio over the phone which I was not expecting. Three years later, I don't recall exactly when I made that call but I have this gut feeling that it was on April 1 because I recall my D was confined to a hospital bed in the living room with a friend visiting and i know the dates of that and so I just looked at a calendar from that year and that was about when they mailed it and when they told me on the phone, which was not why I had called but I only wanted to know when we would be notified and if it was before the Sat. in the Square event. I hope that helps. Call them if you want though.

Thanks, Susan. I feel sure you have probably been asked, and answered, this very same question a gazillion times. I am getting sick of my D text messaging me every day to say "Did my studio assignment come?" :) She got her formal acceptance letter last Thursday, so my guess is like yours: it will be this week. It's good to know that they can find out at the invited students' event otherwise, though. So much excitement!! We cannot wait to visit the school and meet other accepted students and their parents. :) :)

NMR, I bet ya get it by the end of this week. If you want, call and ask when these will be mailed (they may have been already, who knows).

And then let us all know, because our mail in CA will get here a few days after yours!

I called the school today to ask when I would hear about my studio because I haven't even received my admit packet yet. They said they wouldn't be able to tell me over the phone or at the reception this Saturday, and that I might be waiting up until 10 days AFTER I receive the admit packet.....which I haven't gotten yet. It is so hard because a part of my decision is relying on which studio I am placed in! Anyone have any updates for which studio they were placed in?

My D got her admit packet last Thursday and is still waiting to hear about studios, too. And like you, her assignment will in large part determine whether she wants to accept this acceptance! I am sorry to hear that NYU won't give you the information over the phone; others from years past have said that they will, indeed, give out this info. I hope that as soon as people begin getting their assignments, they weigh in here to let the rest of us know. :)

I feel almost guilty writing this, after reading all these stories, but it doesn't change the situation.

Situation is this: D found out today she is in NYU Stella Adler studio. She got rejected from her top choices of schools. She is waitlisted at Boco, accepted to Point Park (and UC Irvine, which she does not want to do).

we are going to Saturday in the Square tomorrow and then spending another few days in NY doing a NYU tour, and talking with students we know there, etc.

Then will have to make a decision. She originally wanted a good MT program, a strong academic program, a campus with real community/college feel. Now she has to figure out what will be best for her.

I know we will discover information this weekend at NYU, but we could really use some guidance/perspective here. Will she be able to still study voice and dance if in Stella Adler studio? Will she get "better" training at Boco, if she can get off waitlist? Will Point Park even be better alternative in this case?

thanks for your help.

Momster,
I know plenty of students in Stella Adler, as well as other acting studios at Tisch who have strong MT backgrounds and continued interest in MT. You have to check the curriculum in that studio but there usually is a little singing and dance in many other studios, though not as much as in CAP21. Also, a student in an acting studio can take private voice for credit (elective). Most of all, students from acting studios can audition for musicals and many are in them. There is MT talent in all of the studios and so many of the musical casts have students from all studios, including Adler. I had a student last year who was heavily involved and trained in MT who got Adler studio and loves it. She'll be working on a musical production this summer. Also, after two years in a studio, you can do another studio, including CAP21, by audtition into another studio and so that is an option. If you go to Saturday in the Square, make sure to meet with Adler students and ask direct questions of them. Also, read the Adler curriculum online. While my D was placed in CAP21, I recall her second choice studio at the time of her BFA auditions, was Adler and in fact, she now says that Adler is one of the best acting studios. She is now doing ETW. Some kids from Adler are in my D's a cappella group. While it won't be the same as a MT program, there are opportunities for voice and dance, as well as MT production opportunities.

Soozievt - my D just found out she was accepted into ETW. How does your D like that studio? We believe that they have opportunities for dance and voice in that studio but are still trying to find out as much information as we can. Any extra information would be very much appreciated!

UAmom,
I'm not home right now and am on a break. Maybe I can write more later. My quick answer is that my D absolutely LOVES ETW!!! She chose to go into this studio (could have stayed at CAP which she has loved very much as well). You are right that there is still dance and voice in this studio and particularly in later semesters with many electives (which is not how CAP is set up). Also, singing classes are not limitted to the MT genre. I know that there is a lot of physical work in the acting. There are opportunities to put on your own productions as a senior (if your D stayed in this studio). Are you going to the Sat. in the Square event? There are student reps there from each studio as I recall and particularly at the receptions and definitely talk to them. My D thinks ETW is an amazing place. She hopes to write and put on her own musical there next year. I do know that students in any studio can take private voice. My D, this semester, is in something called ETW Transfer track and there are students from all the studios in her 15 member group. After this semester, she chooses the studio classes. Try to read the ETW site and then try to talk to current ETW on campus if you go. Right now, my D is in Boston performing and is not at NYU to help out here.

Just had to chime in that my D just learned that she will be in CAP21 (if she goes to NYU)! She is very excited, especially as she spent the last three years in a conservatory-style actor training program in her high school, where there was only one class junior year in musical theater.

Another question ...
I read on an earlier thread that if you audition and transfer to another studion after two years, you would start your junior year at the 2nd year level, at least for CAP21. So does that mean your senior would be like the CAP21 junior year? And would you be eligible to do the senior showcase?

If not, are you better off staying in the initial studio in order for the opportunity to participate in the showcase?

D is still evaluating the decision to accept Stella Adler, and continue with voice lessons as an elective and dance classes outside. So much to consider. We are in NY now and will be taking a tour and talking with a few students we know here in different studios.

Momster,
To transfer into CAP21 studio after two years from another studio, you must audition. So, there is no guarantee of the switch, just to be clear. My D was in CAP21 and had to audition into ETW transfer track and it was very hard to get in with many auditioning for that one. Yes, if your D were to get into CAP21 after two years in Adler, she'd do the soph and junior year curriculum and not the senior CAP21 showcase. However, that is not the only showcase available. There are Tisch Industry Nights which are showcases for all of Tisch and one is for MT and one is for Acting. To get into these, you must audition. So, your D would be eligible for those showcases. For example, my D's good friend was in Strasberg studio and is now a senior at CAP for just one year and he just did the Tisch Industry Night for MT and got many responses from agents at that. You mention staying in an initial studio in order to participate in a showcase and you misunderstand. I do not believe the other studios have a showcase of their own (I may be wrong?) but CAP21 does. Otherwise, the "showcases" for Tisch are available to any Tisch Drama student from any studio no matter how many years you have been in X studio. Many do one studio for two years and another for two and other variations. This has no bearing on any showcase opportunities except the one that is for just CAP students. My D has several friends, as well as I have 2 clients, in Adler who have extensive MT backgrounds. They are cast in musicals, etc.

can anyone give me a little info on playwrights horizon. For an acting major, rather than directing, does this studio give you enough acting courses and what is the quality of thoses classes? Are they less intense acting classes than other studios, since some of the students are intending to go the directing or playwriting direction?
