Clay, I don’t know if Strasberg has its own showcase or not. It might not, but I can’t be sure. You can audition for the Tisch MT showcase, the one my D just did which had students from all the different studios in it, including CAP.

Strasberg puts on its won plays AND musicals. But as a Tischie, you can be part of any of the 100 or so productions per year. Every musical on campus is open to you except the CAP studio ones or if another studio has its own musical for its own students (such as ETW had a musical this fall). So, there are Strasberg musicals, GAP musicals (student run musicals that are very good), Mainstage Musicals, Playwrights Horizons has many musicals put on by senior directing students, Tisch Graduate Musical Theater Writing has workshop level musicals, and so on and so forth.

ETW also has senior Independent Projects…original plays and musicals…my daughter wrote her own musical that will go up next month and cast students and even graduates of Tisch from all different studios. The MT talent at Tisch is not all in CAP21.

Hey all! I posted this on the other studio thread too but i would LOVE to hear more about ETW as a studio! It’s where I was placed for primary studio.

I am an actress, not an MT but of course I’d like to keep it open as an option for a career. Could anyone tell me more about ETW? Do people who get placed in it end up loving it? How is the training vs. other studios (I know every single one is different etc.) Is it small?

nutterbutter…make sure to read ETW’s site and it tells about the studio and the curriculum. My D is in that studio right now but was originally in CAP and so she only has done this studio for her final three semesters (you have to auditoin to get into it if coming from another studio and it is hard to get into actually). Based on what she has told me, she says those in the studio are in love with it. She said that the other students are just so great to be around…there is no competition at all. The faculty is amazing. There is a set curriculum the first two years (she was not in that but she had to first do one semester called Transfer Track in ETW). Then, for the last two years OR if you come from another studio, the advanced studio allows you to PICK you classes in the studio which, for example, was not the case in CAP21 which has a very set lock step curriculum that each student must take…no choices. But you pick which dance class you want and which acting class you want and same with voice. ETW is also very physical acting. And there are some classes in self scripting too or even composing music. Look up all the courses they offer on their site. The studio puts on plays and musicals (this past fall they put on Oliver, though she said it was a very different twist on that musical). The person who wrote Viewpoints is on the faculty. The studio is right in the Tisch building…so convenient! They also put on new works. Last semester, my D auditioned for and got into a Workshop production with Moises Kaufman and his Tectonic Theater Project…10-12 kids were cast and it was an amazing experience. They wrote the show (she acted and sang in it) and I saw it. The chance to work with him was a wonderul opportunity. He was working on this while getting his Broadway Show ready to open at the same time. Another option in ETW is in senior year, you can choose to do an Indpendent Project but you do not have to. This was very attractive to my daughter. Even before she was ever in ETW…she had been the musical director of another ETW student’s song cycle project and was the musical composer to another person’s musical project there. But now, she has written her own original musical that will be put on next month. These are on top of the faculty directed plays and musicals which are not original works.

This studio has a lot of collaboration. A variety of methods are taught, not just one. They have many distinguised faculty as well as bring in many well known artists to work with students.

Their summer program in Amsterdam, which my own kid did not do but many of her friends have done, is supposed to be an amazing life changing experience. You don’t have to be an ETW student to do the ETW Amsterdam summer by the way. The students themselves in ETW are just really neat people and many are creative artists who enjoy going beyond just the material that already exists in theater. The possibilities in ETW are endless.

Clay I auditioned for BoCo in January. And Does anyone know the classes that Stella Adler teaches, do they have any dance or any voice (singing) at all? Or would I have to take them as an elective?

I have been following this with interest as my junior D is looking at schools right now and both Muhlenberg and NYU are on her list. In fact, we were at Muhlenberg yesterday and I just wanted to say that it’s possible they have changed the program a bit, or maybe just what they are calling it. They now have a majors in theatre, musical theatre, design and tech, etc. In other words, I don’t know if you take theatre and then piece together voice and dance, I think it may be more focused than that. My D observed an acting class and one of the students told her she was “double majoring” in theatre and musical theatre which she loved because she got to do everything she wanted. Also, I have heard here that students don’t take acting their first year but my D could have sworn she was in an acting class with freshmen and sophomores. If anyone Muhlenberg person has info about this I (and probably they OP) would love to know.

No acting classes at Muhlenberg the first year. I just spoke with a Muhlenberg freshman I know and he said that’s the case. He also said that no, there is no “musical theater” major: that kids “create” a musical theater major by double majoring in acting/performance and voice/music. I asked the young man why the freshies can’t take acting and he said he thought that the school wanted the kids to get acclimated to college life and learn to trust their new environment so that by the time they are in classes, they can let loose and really explore. I am not sure how valid that is, because every other acting program I know begins freshman year, but I also am a big fan of Muhlenberg and their kids do well, so …

Gottofind, if you search this forum under Meisner, you’ll see that a person named lily88 posted in December about being offered a Meisner placement, early decision I guess. She only posted once but I guess you could PM or email her.

My son met a boy at the Accepted Students Event yesterday who was placed in Meisner and seemed unfamiliar with the studio.

Gottofindaschool, you can let your daughter know there’s a huge Facebook group for this year’s MT kids (Musical Theatre Class of 2013), and many of them are posting studio assignments. Haven’t looked into it, but I’m sure there are also specific NYU groups.
