I'm thinking about attending the University of Chicago, but one thing I'm having trouble finding out about is their study abroad program. I really feel like studying abroad at least a semester or during the summer for not only language immersion, but also cultural/working in a different country (if that made any sense) experience is something I'd like to participate in. Can someone tell me how Chicago treats study abroad or direct me to a site? I'd appreciate anecdotes as well. Thanks so much!

There are quarter-long and year-long programs in the language and in English. Many students opt to take their Civilizations core requirement abroad.

Depending on the language and country of interest, I know from my son that there are some additional programs beyond those listed in the Study Abroad section that the university will sanction if petitioned.

When I attended UofC, there was an incredible summer program taught by Prof. Leslie Freeman where you got to work on an archaeological dig in north/central Spain (Cantabria) for class credit. We also got access to Altamira (which had already been closed to the public, but Dr. Freeman had special privileges since he was one of the archaeologists responsible for the dig there).

I’m not sure if it’s still offered, but it was the best summer I ever had.
