Our sophomore S wants to study abroad for the fall semester of his junior year. Below is the list of schools that he is researching. They are all partner schools of his US college. We are looking for some suggestions, advice, and recommendations of the schools on this list and at this point not looking for of any additional schools. This is a new experience for us any insight you can offer would be appreciated. He is a business major.
- Macquarie University, Sydney
- University of Melbourne, Melbourne
- University of Queensland, Brisbane
- University of Sydney, Sydney
- Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, Vienna
- Universitas Carolina Pragensis (Charles University), Prague
- Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze/University of Economics Prague
- School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University, Maastricht
- Stockholm School of Economics, Stockholm
- Uppsala Universitet, Uppsala
- Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen
Do any of the programs require fluency or proficiency in another language ?
(FWIW When I was in college I spent time in Vienna, Prague, Stockholm, & Copenhagen. Loved Vienna, but lots of old folks. Prague was okay. Stockholm was great (unusually friendly)–reminded me of Minneapolis. Copenhagen was wild.)
If seeking sunshine & beaches, then enjoy Australia.
I think that Covid precautions & restrictions should be a significant factor to consider.
Thanks. No language requirement. We love Vienna too. COVID is the wild card.

Depending upon his concentration, fall junior year is when many business students secure summer internships leading to FT offers, at least in finance and accounting. It would be difficult to miss recruiting season.
Thanks. Finance and accounting is not his path.
Sydney Uni and Melbourne Uni are two of the most prestigious universities in Australia. Unless, I had seen the world already, if I was studying abroad, I’d far prefer a European experience over Australia, which many consider too similar to America. You’ve probably heard the old saying, “What’s the difference between yogurt and Australia?” Answer: “Yogurt has culture.” Sure is fun to banter back and forth with Aussie friends though.
Thanks. He is leaning toward Europe. His top three right now are Copenhagen, Upsalla, and Maastrict. He talked to his older cousin, who did a semester in Barcelona, and how he traveled on the weekends to different cities. That seemed to really pique our son’s interest. The deadline is approaching soon, and he has to give his school the top three choices in order of preference.
Fall semester will be winter and spring in Australia. Weather will be tolerable in Brisbane, but unlikely to be beach like in Sydney and especially Melbourne until late November. Spring semester (ie winter in the US) is a better choice for Australia.
