Study Abroad/Exchange Limits

Hello! On the smith site, it states that no student is allowed to study away for more than one year. My question is this: Does this count for both study abroad AND studying at another college through the twelve college exchange?

IF I get in to smith, I'm very interested in the JYA program. But if I participate in that, does it mean I will not be able to study an additional semester at another college through the 12 College Exchange?

Unfortunately yes, if you do a year of JYA, you can’t also do a 12 college exchange semester. In order to get a Smith degree you need to do two things: 1) earn 64 credits and 2) spend a minimum of four semesters “in residence” at Smith, AND two of those semester have to be in your junior or senior year.

So you need to be on campus for either your entire junior year, your entire senior year, or one semester of each.

Also, it says in the study abroad guidelines that students can’t spend more than one year away from campus, unless they plan to take a leave of absence.

College is all about editing. You’re not going to be able to take every course you want, live in every house you want, or go on every study away excursion that you imagine. But don’t worry, you will have plenty of time to make good choices and you will have amazing experiences with what you CAN do. Plus you’re not even in to Smith yet, just relax. By the time you are ready to apply for JYA your plans will probably have completely changed.

Thanks for the in-depth response, Smithie! You’re very right. I’m not even it yet. oops! I’m sure you remember what its like, though… The excitement and curiosity, the hopeful gleam in the eye… sigh. One can hope.

Anyways, thanks again! I’m very glad that I found an answer to this question. It seems that you love Smith and are very happy where you’ve chosen to be. Congrats!
