Study abroad grants

Does anyone have any experience with study abroad Grants from ELon?
S applied back in february for his Leadership Fellows Study abroad grant and since June his advisor keeps saying it should be approved next month. Meanwhile he is leaving saturday. :(

Think Leadership Fellows are automatically given $1,000
Not sure if your talking about a larger or different grant.
Check with the Bursars office it should be applied there.
My S did semester in W. Africa last year, where is your S heading?

This isn’t the Leadership fellows grant, but my daughter is going abroad in January, and we just got this email:

S is goig to Senegal. It is the leadership fellows study abroad Grant. I did just receive an email from the advisor saying they are working on getting the problem resolved to get the grants applied to the tuition. Supposedly the list of grant recipients was sent to the financial aid office but they were never applied as they should have.
First bump in the system we have had.

Lafalum84 - At one time there was a $1,000 travel grant for leadership fellows. It may have changed and I believe they added a requirement that you occasionally blog. However it may not be as available and automatic as it once was.

Scoutmom9 — Senegal… What an adventure! hope he has a life changing great time. My S had quite the adventure in Ghana. We found that the internet was down most of the time and that purchasing a local cell phone was the most dependable communication. If Senegal works anything like Ghana He can call you inexpensively from his local cell phone and you can purchase a service from Skipe that lets you call a (local to you) phone number that you call from your home or your cell phone and it will ring his cell phone in Senegal. If he has dependable internet you can always Skipe each other face to face for free. We found that the internet and electricity was undependable but cell phones often worked just fine.

When my S (or his new friends) were able to use the internet they would post photos and tag each other so that the photos were available to each other. Hang In…

NCmentor- Thanks for the info using skype. We are unsure how it will all work out. Dropped him off at the airport tonight. Naturally I am a nervous wreck!

I UNDERSTAND… I’m sure that much of the next 4 months will be nerve racking but it will likely also be one of those times that define his life for years to come. Can’t think of much useful advice for you at this point but feel free to PM me anytime you think I can help (or listen).

Study abroad Grant finally applied to tuition as promised.
Thanks Ncmentor for your support!
