I am a 2nd generation korean, sophmore in HS. I am actually rather very interested in increasing my fluency of the language and culture. Basically am I wasting one year in another country? Also is it common?

Thank you

You don't have to spend an entire year. Can't you go for 11 weeks in the summer and greatly improve your Korean. You probably speak some already, right?
Not too many H.S. kids spend a whole year abroad. My friend's son went for 2 summers to China so he could become more fluent in Chinese.

I went abroad for a year in my junior year of hs, and cannot even to begin to imagine what it would have been like to only go for a couple of weeks. I suggest, if you can handle it emotionally, to go for the semester or even the year. I personally, knowing what its like, would feel almost cheated of an experience, only going for a couple weeks. However, any alotted time abroad will of course be extremely rewarding.

not in the summer, sat practice if continue school,i think staying a semestar sounds nice

I'm also Korean and I've been thinking of going this summer and studying at a Korean university. ^^ I don't know much about the logistics, but Korean high schools are very hard to succeed at. Would you study at one that only spoke English? My cousin attends one of those, International School I think?

Otherwise though, I say go for it. Personally I love Korea, I love everything about it, I want to live there after graduating college for a few years.

Oh but another thing...I heard from my mother Korea isn't the safest place right now. Knowing my mother I don't know how much weight to put into this claim, but it's something to think about.

Greensticky, are you proficient in korean? I am a 2nd generation, my korean is fair, lol. Anyway I would hate to go during the summer and not prepare for my JUNIOR year. help, also are you going to give up your citizenship in korea?
