Study-Abroad Restrictions?

I was wondering if there is some kind of cap on how much you can study abroad?

I know that this will sound like a lot, but I want to be a Foreign Affairs / Int Business major and I love traveling.

So I would like to do:
4 J-Term study abroads
2 Summer Sessions
A 2nd year Spring term study abroad in Russia
A 3rd year Spring term study abroad at Sciences-Po for McIntire

I will transfer in with 50 credits between AP/Comm Coll credits, but obviously they cap transfer credits at 60, so I will only transfer the ones that knock out recs (which if I'm an Echols scholar I wouldn't have anyway?).

Thank you! I LOVE UVA so much, and I would really appreciate a succinct/informed answer on this subject.

You need to be careful with credits earned during study abroad. You can check the study abroad website, but I think you will need to make sure that the programs you sign up for will be direct credit, as opposed to transfer credit since you would end up going over the 60 credit transfer cap. The credit type should be listed when you search for programs.

That may be your most important thing to consider, but I would see if anyone else can add any additional detail.

Just as an example: J-Term abroad courses are all direct credit; counts just as if you had been in Charlottesville.

And as a side note on J-Term abroad programs. Some of them tend to be very popular, and since it tends to be a competitive process it may be difficult as a first-year to be accepted into one of the programs. They are a fabulous experience though – I did Berlin 2 years ago with Dean Stewart and I still consider it one of my best UVA experiences. :)

Haha yeah I figured that I probably wouldn’t land all of them XD but I can dream can’t I
The Berlin one is of my favorites! I would love to go on it.

Oh, I didn’t realize that all J-terms were DC, that’s great!
Well on re-evaluation of all of my prospects:
4 J-Terms are all DC (thanks again for the info!)
Both of the summers are Transfer credit (6 total)
Sciences-Po is Transfer credit (~12-18)
UVA in London is DC though!

So I might have to drop one or two of my AP credits, but otherwise I think the credits situation should be fine.

But there aren’t any restrictions (besides credit) on how many you could do? UVA has the best Study Abroad out there! It’s so much better than Harvard’s and UPenn’s, and even Duke’s! (which is also great)

Did you do any other study abroads?

Thanks so much for the help! I know that I’m kind of jumping the gun here, but I like to plan out things for fun and Study Abroad is my favorite thing to look at :D

lol I apologize for the egregious amount of exclamation points

I don’t know of any other credit requirements, you just need to make sure you fill all the area requirements for your major programs…and most of the programs will only take anywhere from 6-12 (out of 30 or so) credits of transfer.

I studied abroad three times, one summer in Brazil, one semester in Spain and another summer in Morocco. They were all DC so I didn’t have to worry about anything, but I’ve known people who have done my programs plus a semester in Sciences Po and it was fine, so you shouldn’t have a problem.

Ok thank you both very much!
