Study Abroad

Has anyone participated (or plan to participate) in Wake's Study Abroad program?

I plan to, although that probably doesn't help you too much. lol.

I'd like to too, but I'm not sure how the language requirements work. I want to study in Venice, but would have to learn Italian from scratch (I took Spanish in HS and have no intention of taking it at Wake). It seems that the London/Venice/Vienna options look the best. I went to Venice in November as saw the house you stay at--it was really beautiful. If anyone has studied there I'd like to hear about it :)

I'll be in Venice next year. As far as the language requirement goes, you can probably (since you've taken Spanish) get on the intensive Italian track, which means that you can be through with your language requirement in three semesters instead of four (and you can take either the intermediate course or the lit course in Venice).

Ginnyvere, did you take Italian language at Wake? What were your courses prior to getting into to the study abroad? Thanks.

No, I hadn't taken Italian (still haven't, in fact. I'm taking it next semester). I took French in high school and placed into French 153 (which is intensive intermediate French, I think), but I knew that I wanted to take a different language in college (either Spanish or Italian). When I found out that a biology professor (I'm majoring in bio) would be the professor going to Venice next Fall, everything sort of fell into place and I decided that my language would be Italian.

I came to Wake knowing that I wanted to spend a semester abroad, though I didn't know where. I realized my first semester that I was going to have a hard time fitting it into my schedule (pre-meds have the least leeway in their schedules, I think), but because of AP credits, I could do it. When it was announced that a bio professor was going, it made my schedule a lot easier because, now, every course I take in Italy will either count toward a divisional credit or it will count toward my major.

As for courses that I took/will have taken before I go to Venice, there aren't a whole lot of requirements. You've got to be through either Italian 112 or 113 (Ita 113 is a course that combines Ita 111 and 112 into one semester by meeting five days a week). There is also one biology pre-req for the two courses that the professor will be teaching in Venice, but I think he may've relaxed that requirement so that people who aren't biology majors can go.

I'd really like to go to London or Vienna, since I speak both of those languages it would probably be a lot easier for me. I've seen the house in Venice but I am not a big Venice fan. I don't think I could live there.

I think it would be really cool to go to Vienna, that would be my first choice. I'd be near my family, skiing and friends. It would be great.

Thanks Ginnyvere! I have a course booklet and I was looking through it and at first I thought you had to take Italian at least to the 215 level. Coupled with the divisional requirements and such, I didn't think I'd be able to fit in a language if I double-majored.

Yeah, I pretty much had to give up the idea of double majoring in order to go abroad (I decided to do one major and one minor). When I found out that someone from the bio department was going to go to Venice, I could've pulled a second major, but I've instead decided to pick up a second minor.

wilmingtonwave ... I am in the exact situation you are and you might want to know that the is a 6 week imersion study of italian (and the culture, art, etc.) over the summer in venice. The cool thing is that to do it you can have ONLY taken 1 course of italian. I'll be at Wake next fall and definately want to participate in this after soph. year. Just thought you'd like to know~~

Awesome! My family has a house in Wilmington! We go there like 5-6 times a year. Actually, I was going to move there a few years ago. We have a townhouse near Wrightsville Beach in Lion's Gate. SO many great restaurants Blue Water Grill, Middle of the Island, Sweet and Savory Bakery, Dockside, Fathoms Bistro, and of course Port City Java!

How ironic!... haha yah i'm gonna miss my hometown sooo much but am thrilled about wake! My bro and i got accepted a couple months back (on the same day!) I'll be beachin it untill then... <3

Are you a twin or something?

my brother skipped 4th grade... he wont be 18 untill second semester of freshman year! aha. (P.S. We WERE NOT planning on attending the same college. oh well, life is crazy!)

Oh that's cool. My older brother went to Wake. Its weird, two kids in a row going there and my younger brother might join. So we'd have 3 out of 4 kids there.
