study abroad

when you study abroad through a program that is not directly run by your school, for example your school offers a study abroad program in england that has a campus in england from the school but you want to study at a school that is already in england, do you have to pay tuition to the school you are currently attending as well as the fee for studying abroad to the other school and/or program?

also, just out of curiosity is any one familiar with the study abroad programs run by butler university..i was interested in the one where you take a year out to study at oxford or cambridge and i was just wondering how selective are those programs to get into?

Hey sratman, I attend Johns Hopkins U, and was accepted into the Butler Oxford program for next year. I know a couple people at Butler, and have had (very small) contact with one of the tutors in the UK. Did you happen to pick up Butler's packet...they have a global one for lots of colleges, but a specialized one for Oxbridge.

I will say the app process was pretty arduous, but along the way I learned a bit on how to approach it. It's very selective, too, I'd say at least 3.85 range GPA despite the mins they give, plus really good writing skills (whole system there is based on writing and tutorials, every week. No exams, nothing, just your writing and oral skills--and they like to see that students are on their expected level). I may be recalling it wrong but I think Butler said the cap that they send to both Cambridge and Oxford (inclusive) is like 60-100 from the nation.
As for financial aid, that's my main problem now, can give more info on that. Also, what college were you thinking of applying to...makes a slight difference on reqs...let me know if I can help

I went to UCL last fall, had to pay tuition for UCL discounted by my school's financial aid, plus a fee to the school.

i was hoping to apply to one of the two Cambridge colleges that are offered..but i am saying..say i went to NYU and the tuition is about 45,000...and the tuition for cambridge is about 30,000 a year..would i ahve to pay the 45,000 and the 30,000 both to amount to an sizeable 75,000..?

do you know how many apply to the program such that only 60-100 actualy get in?

and say i was a poli sci and econ major...would it be wise of me to intend to study law at cambridge..since they like to see a definite path or could i study something like philosophy

littlemage897..can i private message you with a couple of questions also..later?

i dont think that is the case^^^ there is no way that they are going to make you dish out 30,000

If it is study abroad (in an NYU study abroad school) it is full tuition. If it is a foreign exchange (you should be paying for standard cambridge price).

as far as JH goes, and this is kind of common, theres a small fee to pay to "keep enrollment" to the home institution, plus the abroad cost. so I wouldnt say you'd need to pay near that much you mentioned. the real question is how any aid or scholarships carry over, which is presenting a big problem for me.

as for the numbers, I can't give you an exact estimate, and BU is reticent when it comes to divulging. You may have better luck than me calling them up. I do know that a lot of colleges in the US here encourage ox and cam, for one example Yale has a whole page dedicated to Oxbridge specifically (or used to), and it kind of goes on about applying early and such, with encouragement to students nonetheless--I guess cementing the fact that it is difficult. And I'd say that they're an example of a heavyweight in general when it comes to sending kids to these types of things. Similar blurbs were on the Georgetown site too, with classifications on which colleges are a reach. Their officer is actually joining us next year. I know that the college I applied to had 5 or under spots. I could give you a very quick rundown, maybe, on what I did for my app; in all honesty I think it's more a matter of crafting it, there's a very specific type of person they want, or at least thats what the head tutor told me during the process.

I should mention that the abroad "office" here is pretty lame. You may have better luck with your people--its funny cuz next year they get a whole new floor since they built the new quad, go figure.

I think the course of study questions you mentioned may be better in pm, unless you think others would benefit from the discussion. may be good idea to keep it out there, either way im happy to help

theres also the issue of sponsors, like IES and stuff, obviously not Butler but they transfer $$$ in big amts if you get aid. only problem is finding one that does ox and cambridge, which used to be common but now seems to have changed, IES just got oxford, or will get it, but i called them in my search and they still are putting the pieces together. and I sure dont want to ditch what I received and re-apply, buts its a possibility, more on that if you're interested. i actually am curious myself on some of the interests you demonstrated, primarily in the colleges you are looking at as opposed to others
