Hi all -
I’m about to finish my freshman year of high school and I currently have an issue with my schedule. Due to a conflict with band, I cannot take economics, which was supposed to satisfy my financial literacy requirement for graduation. There are two courses that satisfy this requirement, but the second one, while available in the period I currently have off, I’m not able to take that course because it is too full at the moment.
Without a full schedule, I don’t get a gym exemption (I play a fall sport) and I really want that gym exemption. But the only other class offered at that time is journalism, which I’m not toonly keen on taking.
So what do I do? Do I suck it up and take journalism so I get my exemption? Do I take the study hall? But how will that look to colleges (I had another half year study hall this year too)? Do I just push my counselor a little harder to find room?
Any advice is much appreciated.
You should contact your counselor first to see if there is anything they can do. At most schools they allow students to change their schedule the first couple weeks of school, so if the class is full now then maybe at the start of the year, if your school moves around people, you might be able to join that class.
I’m sort of confused on your options; from what I can gather you have three choices: gym, journalism, and study hall. Common advice that I have heard from senior CC members: don’t do something just for the app. Take the classes that you want to take and do what you want to do at that time because colleges do want a genuine application. You don’t to put yourself though 9 months of a class that you hate. Take the study hall class if that is what you want to do and use the extra time you have to work productively, like studying/doing homework, working on an online class, or self-studying for an AP exam.
Is sophomore year the usual time in your school to take a financial literacy course? If you can’t get into a class this year then you have two other years left to fulfill that requirement.
Please tell if I was wrong on your course options - I was a little confused as to if you had to take gym if you were taking study hall.
