We have this small period after lunch for about 30 minutes, in which we can choose to do something from a list of choices (academic (science, math, etc..) clubs, sports, study hall, music, art, etc...)... Would it "look bad" to colleges if I chose study hall instead of some science club or other academic club? I'm pretty sure it pops up on the transcript, even if there's no grade.

No (10char)

I don’t think so. I know some people take study hall just to BS around for a period, but if your grades reflect that you actually used that time to further your academic success, I wouldn’t think it’d matter to colleges. Plus, colleges look at your ECs as a whole, so I’d think that being in one less club wouldn’t really matter unless you had like no other ECs. I’m going to have a very rigorous workload this year, so if I had the opportunity to choose I’d definitely choose study hall.

It won’t hurt you, but choosing to do something like an academic club or sport might help your application and show well-roundedness.

I had 4 study periods last year… 2 for one trimester, and 1 for the two other trimesters.
I mean, I was taking 3 online classes and a zero hour period so my schedule was still packed, but I doubt a study hall will hurt you at all.

It’s not going to show on your transcript, will at least at my school.

Same. On my transcript, it never shows study periods. It only shows the grades for the classes we’ve taken for credit.

I am 100% sure that it shows up on my high school transcript, which is why I was asking, but I guess if I remain involved in EC’s outside of school, I can still do study hall during school.

I’m taking Seminar this year which is basically another name for study hall. Its 90 minutes every other day and I know it will show up on my on my transcript but I’m not worried because I’m taking 5 APs. As long as you have a rigorous schedule, I don’t see any problem in taking study hall , whether or not it shows up on your schedule.

I’m not taking 5 AP’s, but my schedule’s sort of rigorous. I’ll just do other EC’s but still take study hall.

Since you are an incoming freshman, I’d advise against it.
