Studying abroad - with two kids!

I know that my situation is not the most common one -I am a mom of two kids as well as a college student. I started back to school about 2 years ago. I am getting ready to transfer to a 4 year University this Summer, which is just in time for me to go to Israel this summer for a language immersion course.

With that being said, I have also started working with my academic adviser to get things in line for a longer term study abroad. I know study abroad are typically for young and single students, neither of which I am. I am 28, married and I have two school age kids.

My two daughters will be going with me. I am not sure of all of the logistics as of yet, I have plenty of time to get that straightened out. What I am wanting to know is if there are other parents on this forum who have studied abroad with their children.

Thank you -

no one has studied abroad with children?

I would imagine it’s unlikely; this forum is mainly younger college students, with very few mature students.

You’d probably be better off speaking to the international office/study abroad office at your uni and seeing if they have any experience with it.

It will probably cause you tremendous problems regarding visas and schooling.

I registered just because of your question. I am a single mom with 2 school age children, and I am finishing my undergraduate. I am working on studying abroad with my kids, and have found it difficult to find much support as well. I am curious if you have since done this or are still working out the details? My kids are very excited, and I consider it a great learning opportunity for us all to experience together. My greatest concern is international safety of us as American travelers. I am looking at Cuernavaca, Mexico as I can accomplish 2 semesters of Spanish in one Summer. I think I would need to bring another adult tho in order to ensure the safety of my kids while I am in school and to also ensure they enjoy their stay. I played around with a summer camp program for the kids, but I just worry too much about kidnapping and all those uncertainties. I will likely go first, and have them join me after I have checked everything out and settled in.

I would love to hear your plans or what you have done?? Tonia

Tonia -

If you have Skype I would love to chat with you about studying abroad with kids.

My skype is Delecia.Meza

I have not yet studied abroad with my children - however I am getting everything in order to do so. To be quite honest I am still completely unsure of where I am going to study. In my heart I desperately want to study in Israel, but I am strongly weighing the options because of the political unrest, however I feel that in most areas it is very safe.

Second - I could study in France - I feel that would be a great place to live for 2 or 3 semesters abroad with children.

My last option is to study in Mexico as I have family there - and I know my kids would be safe etc. But to be quite honest if I was to continue with my Spanish studies I would prefer to go to Spain

See I am completely up in the air about where to go… I am proficient in Spanish, have been studying Hebrew, know very little French so I guess my options are open.

I’ve known plenty of grad students who take their kids/family to another country with them so clearly this can be done. I’d suggest making friends with grad students who are either from the place where you want to study or who have recently spent time studying there. If the program is run by faculty from you home university chances are that they’ve taken their own kids with them.

The two summers I studied abroad there were some parents who brought their families. In the program that was residential, the student stayed in the dorm while hubby and kid were in a cheap hotel nearby and joined mom when she wasn’t in class. In the program where we had residential options some families rented an apartment for the term and grandma or the other spouse watched the kids during class time.

You might try posting in the Parents section of the forum. The parents who post here have a wide variety of experience.

You might check with faculty who have done sabbaticals abroad. Our family did when our kids were 11 and 13. Getting them into schools was no problem. You will probably need to get them visas but that shouldn’t be a problem either. Post this on the parent forum and ask about sabbaticals.

How did things work out? I am interested in bringing my daughter to study abroad as well, but there is not a lot of information out there!
thanks!
