Studying at other Claremont schools.

I am attracted to CMC's Economics program, but i would also like to major in romance languages. WOuld it be possible to take language classes at the all girls school Scripps as a CMC student? (Scripps offers many languages)

Students are allowed to cross-register for foreign language classes at any of the 5c's. CMC offers Spanish, French, Portuguese(?). Students often take their language classes at Scripps or Pitzer because they are considered to be easier than those at CMC. Students who want to put more effort into their language often chose to take their classes at Pomona, where language classes are killer. (I know from 2 years of Pomona languages)

It is really easy to cross-register for language classes at the 5Cs and certain languages are only offered at one or two schools. I'm pretty sure Scripps is the only college that teaches Italian and German. If you wanted to take Japanese, Chinese, or Hebrew you have to go to Pomona. CGU teaches Arabic. All of the colleges teach Spanish and French. Latin (and Greek?) are offered as well, but I don't know at which college(s). I don't think Harvey Mudd teaches language classes (unless computer languages count).

On a side note, I took Spanish at both Scripps and CMC and found the CMC class to be much easier than the Scripps one. Pomona is notorious for having the hardest (and not always best) language classes. I have friends from CMC who have regretted taking Spanish at Scripps because it was harder than they thought it was going to be. I've heard that Pitzer's language classes are easier/the easiest.

Cross registration is easy for pretty much everything, especially languages since--as explained--many of the departments are cooperative. German, for example, is cooperative between Scripps and Pomona. One semester, Pomona might teach the intro and advanced levels while Scripps might take accelerated and intermediate, and then they'll switch the next semester. Because of this set-up and the high level of cooperation in all language departments, it's hard to say where a class will be easier or harder. I had 4 semesters of language at Scripps and for multiple semesters there were only 1-2 Scripps students in the class...so yes...cross-registration is common and easy! Note that if the romance languages major was on Scripps, you could still take degree-fulfilling courses on any other Claremont college that offered them and your degree would still be from CMC.

I've taken Spanish classes at Pomona, CMC, and Scripps. It's very easy to register for classes at the other schools, especially if they are not full during registration time. (If they are full you may have to email the professor and get written permission... but they are generally very reasonable.) Anyway, both classes at Scripps and CMC were a joke after I had my Spanish class at Pomona. Pomona's class was definitely the most challenging but also the most worthwhile. If you are going into it to actually learn the language and not just get an A, then I'd recomend Pomona... but Scripps is good too.
