Studying German abroad

Hello all,

I am interested in having a career in teaching German and I thought that probably the best way to do that was to study in Germany, to understand the culture, language and lifestyle.

I don't have any degrees at the moment, only 10 GCSE's, and I have a national diploma in sport. (which is probably not that important, lol)

Would these grades be enough to get in to a german college/university, to study german? Or will I have to do some more studying in Engalnd? Also, is this the best route to take because, I have also read about a TEFL and ESL qualifications. What are they like?

My ultimate goal, is to hopefully become a german teacher/translator to english which is obviously my mother tongue.

I would appreciate all the information you could give!

Many thanks,

Graham

Hi Graham, I am also hoping to persue a career in German but am planning on going to university in the UK. I studied abroad in Germany my junior year of high school after taking two German courses at school and one online. I learned so much, and my German improved greatly. I could have never reached a level of such proficiency in a class. I don’t know much about applying to German colleges or universities but you should like at DAAD. They have a lot of information about applying to schools in Germany. Good luck!

Hey Graham,

If you are going to become a teacher (in whatever field) you will need to have your qualifications in teaching and in your area of expertise.

Learning a language, however, is an entirely different story. I did a year-long intensive course in Germany in Freiburg in Breisgau – absolutely beautiful city about 1 hour north of the Swiss border and not to far away from France.

The school I went to was a no-frills, effective school. I learned really fast and was able to take and pass the German proficiency exam (needed to get into a German university) in just six months.

The school I went to was the Sprachenkolleg fuer auslaendische Studierende. Here’s a site where I get my language school info – the link is for German schools.

Keep in mind that Germany seems to have more opportunities to study German than other countries have to study their languages. In Germany, you have language schools,
programs for foreigners, Hochschulen of all sorts, Sprachenkollege, etc.
