Subject SAT Math Level 2

Does it matter in college admissions when the student takes Subject SAT Math Level 2? Do the colleges prefer that the exam be taken in, say, Junior year rather than freshman year? Let’s say, the student is done with Pre-calc in Grade 9 and wants to take Math 2 exam toward the end of Grade 9. Is the student at a disadvantage compared to the student who takes it in Grade 11? Thanks.

You should take it when you are done with pre calc. Grade is irrelevant if you have mastered the material. Take a practice test to see if you are ready.

No. Colleges don’t care whether it is taken in 9th grade or later. The key to doing well is to have recently taken math at a similar level as the content of the exam–so at the end of pre-calc, as mentioned above. Also, make sure your student takes multiple practice tests because building up speed is important for this one.

My daughter took it last weekend, near the end of this year’s Pre-Calc class in 9th grade. I think taking it later, rather than right after learning the material, would make no sense. I’m not concerned at all about it being a disadvantage.
