Any thoughts on the best time (junior spring vs. senior fall) to take Subject tests? If you are looking to go ED or EA, is there any downside to waiting until fall of senior year to take one or more subject tests? I need 3 Subject tests -- is there any benefit to spreading these out?

Some considerations

Take the subject test toward the end of the class so it is fresh in your mind. For example, take US History in May or June of the junior year. If you finish trig/pre-calc sophomore year, take Math II in sohpomore year. Otherwise, you will have to spend much more time reviewing.

If you are taking an AP test, take the subject test around the same time. Even though the test formats are different, they are based on the same material. So just need to study once.

Take it earlier rather than later if you have the choice in case you want to re-take. Any test you take in fall of senior year, you might not have time to re-take even if you want to. The fall test dates are Oct, Nov and Dec. Depending on the college deadline, Nov and Dec test scores might or might not be soon enough. Keep in mind that scores are not available until about 3 weeks after the test and it takes time to send them to the colleges. Also if you are applying rolling, the earlier you complete the app, the better.

Ditto as to best time is usually soon after taking the course. However, if you are wondering about last dates by which you can take the tests: (a) for early action or early decision for which decisons are sent out in mid-December, some colleges require that all tests be completed by the Oct test date and the rest require that they be completed by the Nov test date; (b) for regular decision, a large number require all testing to be done by the Dec test date but many will take Jan test scores.

i have a similar problem-i’m taking the spanish SAT II in may (its my junior year), and i want to take the lit one in oct.
the only problem is, i’m taking lit as an AP my senior year, so i will be relatively unprepared?
if i can, i also want to take US history in oct., but i’m taking it as an AP senior year.
any suggestions?

June. Always prepare for them before taking them. Sometimes that requires different prep than AP test prep.
