What is the best time in high school to take the SAT/ACT? How about the subject tests?

That’s my dilemma. I feel like I should take the US History Subject Test in May, since it’s around the time of the AP exam, and after the AP exam, our class just has projects and I don’t think I’m going to retain the information as well if I take it a month later. I’m also going to be very busy the last two weeks of April and the first two weeks of May, so I don’t know that I want to stress myself out taking the SAT at that time.

I think the best times to take the subject tests are in June, when you’ve covered a full of year of the subject, but for my reasons mentioned, I think I’m going to take the SAT at that time.

Additionally, I plan to make full use of the test dates in October, November, and December; two for the SAT, and one for the subject tests. (There are test dates those months, right? I can’t remember for sure off the top of my head.)

It’s a personal decision. If you are prepared, take it. Generally, you should take the SAT once in your Junior year (March or June if you have AP exams in May). That way you can use October, November, and December to take your SAT IIs once or twice or retake your SAT I once or twice.

Retaining information shouldn’t be a problem if you are well-prepared, especially for the SAT I.

Yes, you are correct. There is no September test date. Also, some colleges accept the January SAT (although I wouldn’t rely on this fact if you don’t know which colleges you want to apply to yet).

If you plan to apply early decision, you may only have time for one test date your senior year.
