Daughter is a junior and is currently taking:

AP Language and Composition
AP Biology
AP U.S. History
Honors Pre-Calculus

Some of the schools she is thinking of applying to require two SAT Subject Tests and she is considering taking the tests for each of the subjects listed above and then choosing the best two scores to send to the colleges that require them.

Does it make sense to just take the tests at the end of the school year, in May or June? Or, can one or more of them be taken earlier? You can apparently take as many as three of these tests on a single day. Does this seem like a good idea? Finally, I have read somewhere that it is better to take the Math 2 test instead of the Math 1 test. Do you agree?

Taking three tests on one day is fine; each test is only 1 hour long. I would recommend your daughter take US History and Biology (and Math II, if she’s prepared enough) in May, since the studying she’ll be doing for APUSH and AP Bio will coincide with any studying needed for the Subject Tests (because the May Subject Tests are nestled in the weekend between APUSH (Friday) and AP Bio (next Monday) exams). I would not take any of the exams (I would assume US History, Biology, Math II) before May; she will not have learned enough material.

And I agree that Math II is better than Math I since your daughter is taking Pre-Calculus. Math II has a more generous curve and shows mastery of more advanced material (i.e. pre-calculus).

What about the subject test for literature, will my daughter be positioned to take it at the end of the year since she is taking AP Language and Composition? Or, should this test not be taken until after taking AP Literature as a senior?

I have no experience with the Literature Subject Test. All I know is that it’s been compared to SAT CR on crack, that it has a ridiculously harsh curve, that there are some rather obscure selections on there, and that some of the best English students get tripped up by some of the questions. But if the Biology, US History, and Math teachers are good enough, your daughter won’t need to take the Literature test.

If your daughter did well on the SAT I CR section, then she can consider trying the Literature Subject test since they are some what similar.

My son did the same as 314159265 suggested, take the subject test the same month as the AP test. He took APUSH, AP Chem, US Subject, Chem Subject tests all in May. He took Math II in June.

That way, only need to study US History and Chem once. Even though the format of the subject test and the AP test are different, they are based on the same material.

I suggest USH and Math 2; they have pretty good curves, especially the latter. She could definitely take Bio as well, but she should ultimately take whatever subject she is most comfortable with and is best at. Literature is usually a difficult test, I’ve heard that neither of the AP English courses really help you much to do well on it.

I also agree that if she is to take USH and Bio, she should definitely do so in May, or June at the very latest. In my opinion, it would be a waste of her time if she took them in Oct/Nov/Dec of her senior year, since she would have to study for them again when she has other classes to worry about. I took USH in May, a few days before the AP exam, and I’m very glad I did; some students that were in my APUSH class last year are now trying to take the subject test, realizing that they forgot a majority of the material that they crammed in before the AP exam months prior.
