Submitting an Abstract

I’m applying to Brown and PLME RD, and I was wondering if it would be to my benefit to submit a scientific abstract. It wasn’t anything earth-shattering, but it came from a science program I did over the summer. However, since the viewbook says that “submissions rarely affect admissions decisions. You should not feel obliged to submit to the Board anything in addition the required credentials,” should I be dissuaded from doing so? Also, since the abstract has the name of my mentor who wasn’t too impressed with my scientific ability, it might not be as positive as hoped for if Brown decides to contact her.

Hence, would it be recommended that I submit the abstract? I was thinking that since Brown gives a slight advantage to science majors and since I’m applying to PLME, showing that I have actually gone in depth and written an abstract (as well as created a poster) for my project might help with admissions. However, as previously mentioned, I don’t want it to come back and bite me. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated! :]

sending in an abstract is good, which is also what i did. just don't send in the entire research paper or anything

i don't think brown would actually make the effort to contact your mentor and ask about you. sending in an abstract prob. won't make a difference but at least it's a tangible result of your research. i think i sent in an abstract with my brown app, although i didn't think my research was all that impressive either.

I sent in my abstract and it's not that impressive either. I also wrote an essay for the EC section about my research. I'd just send it... the ad com will probably skim it and go, "cool, this kid's smart enough to do some research and write 200 words that I can't understand". I don't think it'll be a big deal.
